THis will be my first IM. Just read ride route and recommendation. Not wishing to sound like a complete novice it says suitable for "race bike". Is this a tri bike or race bike with aero bars or a standard sportif racer?... Have read lots of blogs about the event. Some negative, most positive. The biggest positive was the local support..... I hope they stay late as I intend getting my monies worth and taking a good 16hrs... I just don't get these guys who blast onwards like theres no tomorrow. Chill guys enjoy the day... Let the pro's have the glory." good luck to all and ESP me.....rock on 16.59;59 secs"

I heard it is so up and down with steep hills it might be better on a road bike than TT.. maybe someone who's done it knows better...?

John - I've done Ironman Canada - first time on a road bike and this sunday on a time trial bike and there is double the amount of climbing in IMC than there is in this race. If you have a TT bike I would certainly not rule it out at all - you should go with the bike that is most comfortable to you that you're going to be feeling the best on after 112 miles. I'm seriously considering this race for 2013. Looks amazing!

I'm sure this is a daft question, but can someone explain what is meant by the phrase "giving rides over 650 metres of altitude difference throughout the course" which appears in the bike course section of the IM Wales website, because it looks like the actual height gain is 1750m. Thanks

@Meg - I have also raced IMC three times. first on a road bike and my second two times on a TT. I found that the TT bike was much better on descents for the full aero position although I could go either way on the climbs. I'm going to race IM Wales 2013.....and I have sold my TT bike. wondering if I should invest in a new one for this race......

Husband and I are looking at doing this event in 2013 also. Coming from Aus, via London. Can anyone recommend best way (transport options) to get from London to Tenby with 2xbike bags??

Hi, I did my first Ironman in Tenby this year and did 7 hour for the bike. i rode a FELT AR3 road bike with aero bars. It was good on the undulating 'dig climbs' which this course is all about. I was passing TT's on the uphills and sometimes getting caught on the flat, by the same people, so its 6 and two 3's. Re travel to tenby, you can go on a train from London Paddington, which you need to change at Newport, then it is straight onto Tenby. Takes 5 hours I am afraid, but Tenby Station is right by transition. Other than that, hire a car, but it is still a 5 hour drive, and parking is not the easiest, and is not needed around Tenby. Finally a National Express coach can be taken from london to tenby, but that takes 7 hours and changes in Swansea. Hope this helps,

I know this is not constructive, however for the record Meg, IMC does not even have the same amount of climbing as IMW never mind double!!!!

Looking at IMW. Anyone know how it compares to IM Wisconsin or Lake Placid. Have done both a few times but its time for something new

Anyone able to compare this to IM Switzerland? I'm booked for Zurich but considering shifting my entry to allow more time over our UK "summer".

Watched this race in 2012, it was fantastic. The compere was billing it as the hardest Ironman of them all! I have entered for 2013.

Hi all, Just had a late entry to the race accepted via Macmillan. Did the Outlaw 3 weeks ago which was my first Ironman distance and as I'm sure you all noticed the weather that weekend was unbearable for a long distance Tri. Anyway having completed the distance I've taken the plunge whilst the fitness levels are high and joined this years IMW. Just need to smash some hills for the next 4 weeks before tapering as the Outlaw was a nice flat course! Good luck to all see you in a few weeks.

Hi I looking for some advice ! I will be taking part in IMW 2013 and using a road bike due to the climbing but unsure waht cassette to use as I cant make my mind up from a 53-25 or 53-28 ???? I would say I am a strong bike rider and good climber Any suggestions

I have done the course 3 times (longcourse and IM) and use a 53 - 28 set up. At times I wish for a 53 - 30 set up :-) The elevation gain on the course is 9365 ft.............. Hope this helps

John, I di the race last year and had just purchased a TT bike. There is enough on this route as there would be on any 180km route to make a TT bike worth using. There are some heavy climbs on the route especially within the last 30km of each lap (ame hills twice). I will certainly be using my TT bike as it is the bike I train most often on and worth a couple of km/hr on the normal road bike. A brialliant day out in the countryside. Andy B

I did the first lap of this ride during the long course weekend in July. My Garmin recorded 4,524 feet of climbing over c70 miles. That leg of it didn't feel too arduous, no more difficult than say a Wiggle sportive for example.

Did IMW iin 2011 and would recommend using a road bike rather than a TT one. The support around the run course is fantastic and also some big crowds in areas on the bike. Will be back to do it all again in 2013, best of luck to all and remember smile and enjoy the day!!!!!
