Once moderately athletic then sidetracked by life. Resumed cycling in 2008 for a number of reasons:increasing awareness about peak oil, the rapid depletion of a finite resource; impact of carbon dioxide on the climate; growing disdain for cars, especially after death of eldest daughter in a car accident; the connection between U.S.A. demand for oil and unsavory foreign policy behavior; concern about what the world will be like for my children and grandchildren; and being warned about being over-weight, pre-diabetic, and a cholesterol risk. From the global to the individual scale, people made these problems and I do not want to be a contributor to these troubles. Additionally, I have found a youthful joy toward cycling that is both physically and mentally cleansing and restorative. I am a college professor of geography and European history at a small Washington state college.
