Bikemap in your language? We need your help!

Translating Bikemap (or improving a translation) is easier than you think. There's a translation service at bikemap.net/translate where you can translate Bikemap directly within the context.

First things first

First you need to become translator to be able to access bikemap.net/translate. Please contact us at buero (..) toursprung (.) com, sending us:

  • some words about you,
  • what language you want to translate (and why) and - most importantly -
  • your exact user name on Bikemap.

We will then enable you as translator, if translators are still missing in that language.

How to translate (or improve a translation)?

Super easy. As a translator go to bikemap.net/translate and select the language you want to translate and click "Enable translation buttons". Now everywhere on the site you will see tiny buttons beside each piece of text:

Click on that button and a window opens for translation:

Supply your translation (and an optional comment here). If you are unsure of your translation don't click "Enable" - otherwise it will immediatly be published! If your translation is better (or the only one) click "Enable".

Again: Please take care of consistency througout the site! Don't mix synonyms like "route" and "track".

Alternatively you can view the page "All Keys" and select the specific key you want to translate. This page also makes it easier to see what hasn't been translated yet and to maintain consistency.

Anything to take care of when translating?

Yes! If you see anything within <> (less-than and greater-than signs) like this <% displayname %> or that <a href="#" onClick="parent.hideRouteEditor();"> please leave them untranslated. They are part of the software.

Improve existing languages

The 50 most important languages are waiting for you to be translated. Most are at 0% or very low, while some others are almost complete. You will see. Often existing translations are not optimal - just replace them with a better version (and add a short comment for the other translators why your version is better). Always take care of consistency!

Launch a translation

As soon as a translation is mostly complete (no need for 100%!) tell us and we will add the language to the language drop-down.

Add new languages

Want to translate a language that is not in the list? Drop us a line.

How to get rid of the translation buttons?

There's a link "Turn off translation functions" on the bottome of the Translate-Page.

Note: You have to stick to always the same language when translating, you can't switch to another one during a session. (And you shouldn't anyway: Please stick to your mother tongue.)
