Routes in Österreich / Niederösterreich / Schalladorf

This is a (almost) fully sign-posted bike tour through the beautiful Weinviertel in Lower Austria (famous for its 'Grüner Veltliner', but that is not the only juice worth drinking there).

You can start the tour wherever you want. The tour is about 45 miles long and takes you over some very low hills, through vineyards, some charming villages in the Northern Weinviertel and its more famous 'Kellergassen' (alley ways with wine cellars). Most of the track is on small paved roads (Güterwege), but there are some passages to be cycled on main roads (not busy at all as those who know the Weinviertel are aware of) and very little, maybe less than half a mile or so, has to be managed on gravel surface (still suitable for race bikes I suppose).

At some places, especially Peigarten and Nappersdorf, some signposts appear to be missing so it is recommended to have a look at the track online first (http://www.netteam.at/gemeinden/user/31022/dokumente/fz_Portugieser.jpg, but do not trust this map too much either). Between Jetzelsdorf and Haugsdorf, I have taken the main road because I was partially lost. However, there should be some signpost pointing towards some smaller roads through and around the villages. In addition, signposts are sometimes overgrown or deliberately shifted to point in a different and wrong(!) direction. In fact, the 'loop' at Peigarten was an encore, but a worthy one. I recommend making a U-turn in case you have not seen a signpost for half a mile or so (unless there is no way to leave a straight road).

The tour offers some beautiful vistas across vineyards and the whole region. I strongly recommend a stop at one of the 'Heurigen' along the track.

Enjoy!
