An emblem of the cycling world the CIMA COPPI can be reached from three different sides. This spectacular tour allows you to discover the all the three sides of Pass. The Stelvio Pass or Stilfserjoch, how it is called in German, is one of Italy's roofs with its 2758 m. At the same time, it is one of the highest Alpine Passes of Europe. You will depart from Bormio 1215mt, reach the umbrail Pass and cross the Swiss border. The road is well kept, but for a few km the road is conduct you to Prato allo Stelvio and then Gomagoi, where starts the South Tyrol, and hardest side of the Stelvio. The original road was built in 1820-1825 by the Austrian Empire to connect the former Austrian province of Lombardia with the rest of Austria, covering a climb of 1871m on the Alto Adige side. Since then, the route has changed very little. The scenery is really spectacular: the braulio vally with its formidabile waterfalls, the sourronding mountains & the stelvio glacier … but you have to be well trained to enjoy the panorama!
Not every knows that the Stelvio is a ski resort during the summer months. The glacier is open for skiers from May to November.
unpaved. You will enter Italy again in Tubre. The flat road will
HAVE FUN!
BIKE HOTEL LA GENZIANELLA
This classic loop starts from the Bike Hotel La Genzianella.
If outside our parking place you turn right you choose the hardest tour and you head to Mortirolo.
Going right you do the tour on the reverse side that is less harder.
Since our guests are all well trained we turn right and head to Mortirolo.
Passo del Mortirolo is a hard pass (it has sections at 22%): in May 2004,
while training in Italian Alps, Lance Armstrong said that it was the hardest climb he had ever ridden.
Before the first tunnel, turn right direction "Cepina", it always follows the old road up to Mazzo di Valtellina,
synonymous Mortirolo for cyclists.
The road from Mazzo di Valtellina is one of the most demanding climbs in professional road bicycle racing, having been used in the Giro d'Italia stage race many times. The Giro only
went over the climb for the first time in 1990. In 1994, the first rider over the top was a young
Marco Pantani and there is now a memorial of il Pirata on the climb. His best time was 42 minutes.
Pantani made a name for himself on the Mortirolo and his attack in the next years instantly made
him a darling of the cycling media and in time, a national hero in Italy.
Back to our route the mountain pass can be climbed
1) from Mazzo di Valtellina: the actual climb to the summit starts at Mazzo di Valtellina
and is 12.4 kilometres long at an average of 10.5% (height gain: 1300 m), the maximum gradient being 18%
2) from Grosio: The actual climb to the summit starts at Grosio and is 14.8 kilometres
long at an average of 8.3% (height gain: 1222 m).
Climbed the mythical past ("temple of cycling" as stated by a sign along the road), we
we reach Monno where we have to turn left towards Ponte di Legno, about 20km,
then follow the signs to Passo Gavia up to 2620m.
It is a gradual climb for about 4 kms. The road is paved, but after a couple of km,
it turns to a dirty narrow one lane road, where it reaches suddenly 16%.
The Passo Gavia a really hard climb with 18% in parts. It never really
gets below 10% with steady, steep grades, lots of switchbacks and often very narrow. A dark gallery scares a lot of cyclists. Often you are tempted to increase the rhythm to exit the gallery, and when you are out you are exhausted! For the guests staying at the hotel we will provide bike lights for your climb. Just ask it at the reception!
Every few hundred meters there’s a little parking place carved out of the mountain,
for cars to pull over and pass. If summer has just begun at the top you will ride between snow walls. It is really spectacular!
Now it's all downhill a hard and tricky descent into Bormio with an incredible number of switchbacks;
the same descent as ridden by Andy Hampsten in 88’ Giro when it was snowing and freezing cold!
When you will be having a drink in La Genzianella garden you will have in your
legs 115km and 3200m of difference in altitude.
Departure form bike hotel la genzianella- bormio
The Passo del Foscagno (2991mt) connects Bormio to Livigno.
It is usually part of longer tours such as
(1) Tirano - Bernina - Livigno - Foscagno - Bormio, or
(2)Bormio - Foscgno - Switzerlan - Tubre - Santa Maria - Umbail Pass - Bormio.
This pass is open all year round. Be prepared to high traffic; Livigno is a duty free area that
attracts a lot of tourists ;)
The uphill starts in Isolaccia and continue through the little villages of Semogo, San Carlo, Arnoga.
You will then enter into a different landscape made up of pine and larch woods.
At the level of 2000mt the scenario is more essential. Threes are absent; the terrain is rocky and your left side you will see the so called “paravalanghe” (avalanche stoppers) used to stop possible avalanches in winter time. For the same reason a few tunnels have been built in the sixties. They are all open galleries and will create no problem to cyclists. After the last tunnel you can already see the top of passo del Foscagno wich is not only a pass. Although both sides of the pass are in the same country, Italy, you are required to pass through customs at the top. This is due to the duty free status of Livigno.
The tour departs from La Genzianella Bike Hotel 1215mt and leads you southern to Tirano.
The scenery is much different: palms grows here! We are at 450mt and are about to climb nearly 2000mt!
Just outside Tirano you will run parallel with the Swiss red Railway (UNESCO HERITAGE)
The road is not too steep here.
You will soon cross the Swiss border (remember to bring you passport)
and enter many little & quite villages such as Poschiavo and its lake.
Out of the towns the road climbs gently on sweepers and a surface which stays superb all the way.
Up to the tree-line, then the road gets consistently tighter,
but because it's a major road it's neither steep nor narrow.
The section near the top is absolutely brilliant - fast tight bends which turn into huge,
wide hairpins - just chuck the bike over and keep it there.
Just 2 km before reaching the top of Bernina Pass turn right
on Forcola Pass (2315mt) and lead to Livigno (duty free area).
A fast descent will conduct you to the alpine village.
New harpins are waiting. You will pass the hospital and you will be at a roundabout.
Take the first exit and start your climb again.
Around 10 harpin will conduct you to Passo Eira; another fast descent, an open tunnel, and a gentle climb of nearly 5km till Passo del Foscagno.
You are about to cross 2000mt for the third time today.
Bormio, its hot springs, and La Genzianella staff are ready to welcome you again. You surely need some rest!
From Bormio (Alta Valtellina) Bike Hotel La Genzianella to the Gavia Pass (cima Coppi).
This ancient roadway that connected Bormio with the "Venices" has become a must in the cycling word.
The 1988 Giro d'Italia, under heavy snowfall, consacrated this as an epic climb.
The Gavia Pass is opened from June to September.
Departing from Bormio, the uphill starts in Santa Caterina Valfurva (the other side stardts from Ponte di Legno -BS-).
The side facing the Valtellina is less steep than the other one,
even if it is a longer way up to the pass.
The road is mostly constantly uphill, with some short but very steep stretches.
Starting in Bormio, take the road SS 300 which leads through the Valfurva:
you pass by its little villages Uzza, San Nicolò, S.Antonio and San Gottardo and will arrive,
after 13 km and 600 metres in altitude, to Santa Caterina.
After Santa Caterina the "real" road up to the Gaviapass begins with its first switchback.
From here one, the gradient is most of the time at about over 7%, it reaches, however,
quite often the 10 % mark for short stretches.
The tight road brings you constantly higher in altitude.
Before the top of the Gavia you will cross a bridge over the "Rezzalasco",
then you arrive at the alpine lodge "Berni" on a level of 2545 m,
where a war memorial reminds us of the First World War.
The road gets a little less steep now and after a couple of kilometres you reach the Gavia Pass.
The Gavia Pass connects the provinces of Sondrio and Brescia,
and is one of the highest and even most beautiful passes of the Alps.
(Thanks to our friends Carrie and her husband Tobias from www.granfondocyclingtours.com
for the accurate tour description.)
The Mortirolo Pass is opened to traffic only in summertime, from May to September. It connects the two provinces Sondrio and Brescia and is a particular challenge to bikers, who prove their power on this steep Alpine pass.
In order to reach Mazzo di Valtellina (the starting point of this pass) follow the route SS38; south direction (follow the signs for Sondrio. Please pay attention just outside Bormio; the SS38 enters long & dark tunnels very dangerous for bikers. Keep the right side please and follow the signs for Cepina. This is the old SS38 and will gently conduct you to Mazzo di Tirano (near Tirano).
Since the old SS38 and Mortirolo are secondary roads, traffic is not too bad. Right passed Mazzo you find soon a very steep uphill stretch. After that, the road will lead constantly uphill through the woods, untill you reach a tiny village. Passed that, the road gets steeper again and you drive uphill again surrounded by trees. Only a few parts of the road are not in the wood, which you leave just before getting to the top. On the Mortirolo Pass you find a wonderful panorama of the surrounding valleys and mountains
The Stelvio Pass or Stilfserjoch, is one of the highest Alpine Passes of Europe. The original road was built in 1820-1825 by the Austrian
Empire. Since then, the route has changed very little.
After the traffic light in Bormio's centre you arrive soon at the first
switchback on the way to the Stelvio. Further on a few more turns
follow, one of them being the junction to Valdidentro and Livigno.
You carry on into the direction of the "Bagni Vecchi",
the old thermal baths, and after leaving them behind,
you will reach another passage with a bunch of switchbacks.
These are followed by a section with not too many curves, but some dark tunnels* to cross, and soon after those you find yourself in front of the steepest part of the Stelvio road, to conquer by
numerous switchbacks.
In this stretch the maximum gradient will be reached,
and you can admire the Braulio-Waterfalls.
After having passed this uphill, you get to the Plateau
"Pian de Grembo", where the road gets low running and leads through alpine meadows. At the end of this flat part, the last steep uphill to reach the Stelvio begins. And from here the top of the pass comes even in sight. Passing by the junction into the direction of the Umbrail Pass and Santa Maria, only a few kilometres and about 250 metres in altitude are left to reach the CIMA COPPI.
The last couple of km are the toughest so keep some energy in
reserve! The road surface on this side is usually kept in good conditions. Have fun during you descent!
*ASK AT THE RECEPTION : WE CAN LEND BIKE LIGHTS
The pass is open only from the end of May till end of October
The Giro d’Italia often ran over the Apine passes of the area. The giro made our mountain famous all over the world! The tour that is described here is very hard and follow the route made during Giro d’Italia 2010. The 20th stage departed only 200mts from the Bike hotel La Genzianella and arrived at Passo Tonale after 5 peaks!
The Italian grand tour 2010 opened on the flat roads of the Netherlands and ended on the difficult Alpine Passes. Difficult climbing characterizes the end of Giro, and the course included visits to the Terminillo, Zoncolan, Mortirolo, Gavia, and Plan de Corones.
The queen stage have been saved the second last day > BORMIO > PASSO TONALE (178km)
The final climbing stage of the 2010 Giro runs between Bormio and Ponte di Legno Tonale and climbs five major passes. The riders faced the Forcola di Livigno, Passo di Eira, Passo di Foscagno, and the Passo di Gavia before reaching the finish at the summit of the Passo del Tonale.
The Passo di Gavia is the Cima Coppi, the highest peak in 2010 year’s race, and carries a prize for the first rider to cross the summit. The descent off the Gavia is a tricky one, and wet weather could make for a hard day of racing. Bad legs on this stage would be disastrous for a Pink Jersey contender, and these final climbing stages are made to create a suspenseful finale for Italy’s grand tour.
But at the end the Giro's last mountain stage revealed itself calmer than expected for Ivan Basso (the pink jersey). The frightening five peaks, among which the terrible Gavia - still a question mark due to inclement weather -, only generates some unrealistic attempts by Sastre and Vinokourov during the initial climb. The stage, 178 kilometres from Bormio to the Tonale Pass, livens up at last during the final kilometres when Evans hurls forward. He disrupts the pack of hard-hitters in his pursuit of the podium. The Giro 2010 ended with the time trial in Verona on the day of Ivan Basso's official triumph.
This a very short ride, that could be helpful for a little warm up. This route is a new climb that can be added to road bike maps only since a few years. Since 2006 it was infact unpaved. The 18 harpins leads to the Fraele towers, which once were used as strategic point of communication. This road is very ancient and once was known as the "salt & wine route" and connected Valtellina with Switzerland. Immediately after the tower two artifial lakes are used for the production of elecricity . Directions: cycle in direction of Livigno, and at Premadio, 150mt after Pizzeria fiordalpe follow the sign for LAGHI DI CANCANO (on your right) Once you get to the top you can only go back since the road around the lakes is not aspahlted. You can go back to the main route SS301 (on the way to Livigno) and follow the sign for the Le Motte, and then, once again in Bormio You can continue your tour climbing Bormio 2000 (other 10km) Thank you! Hotel la Genzianella
Percorso Classic della 4° edizione della Granfondo MTB Alta Valtellina, di 39 Km.
This will probably be the route we take back
A shorter route than the previous day, with less climbs, but the climbs are really something else. Starting straight out of Bormio with the towering Passo Stelvio, 25km at an average of 8%, topping out at just under 2,800m. Following one of the most amazing (in terms of scenery) descents you'll ever come across, our route takes us through the orchards surrounding Merano, before heading North to take on the Monte Giovo. Less famous than the Stelvio but no less breathtaking and I personally think more difficult. Finishing the day in Vipiteno, where you really should try the Yoghurt, along with everything else you can fit in. Tomorrow is another tough day.
