Routes in United States / California / Oakland

Rode through Oakland to Berkeley's Gourmet Ghetto and then back down College Ave to meet the lady at Rooz cafe on Piedmont Ave.

A nice easter ride to see the Sunset on the Embarcadero.

Went over to Whole Foods for a (Crappy) slice of cake from their in-store Cafe Gratitude.

Remembered I loathe that place.

Climb Spruce and ramble through Wildcat Canyon in the Berkeley Hills, paying a visit to Inspiration Point. The ride then cuts through Lafayette and Rossmoor on the way to San Ramon. A long, paceline-friendly stretch on Danville Blvd is a nice prelude to the only other significant climb of the day, the scenic Norris Canyon. After riding through Castro Valley, the ride heads back to Oakland via Bancroft Ave.

The complete route travels to Castro Valley via BBR (Burdeck-Butters-Robinson) and Redwood Rd, then traverses the Dublin Grade and Foothill Rd to Sunol before the "main event" - southbound on Calaveras Rd. The ride ends at Fremont BART.

9.2% grade

using their more precise figures, not their roundoffs:

distance: 0.691 mi

start elevation: 987'

end elevation: 1322'

net gain: 335'

Also, if you trace their profile it shows at least two dips in the road. Ha, ha, ha!

A great little 1 hour workout. The loop has a great mixture of terrains, roads and views... from suburban busy streets, to Redwood trees, to hilltop grand views of the east bay with San Francisco across the bay.  Tunnel Road is a great mid route section to test yourself.

Tunnel Road climb

Approximately 3 miles/ 800 ft of climbing

Home to Solano Peet's

Just checking to see distance and elevation gain from home to Solano Peet's

My loop from home to Orinda Peet's and home via Wildcat, Grizzly Peak, Skyline, and Redwood

Steep hills in the middle of a rountine ride from Redwood Heights section of Oakland to Montclair/Temescal and back.  Some 16-18% grades in the hills of Fairlane and Swainland Dr's. Some elevation data is missing from the auto-generated chart below (the peak on Swainland is missing... it climbs an addtion 50-100' at a very steep grade).

An East Bay circuit starting at Lake Merritt that takes in Grizzly Peak, Wildcat Canyon, the Three Bears, Pig Farm Hill, Deer Hill Rd and Snake Canyon before returning to the lake.

The old routes has rest stops at the ECG gas station on San Pablo instead of Jack in the Box. Also has more of the ride on Richmond Parkway and less on the Bay Trail.

the new route is here:

Century ride in the Oakland, Berkeley Hills.  Total elevation gain is 20,000 ft!  Basically all of the steep streets in the hills, max 26%. Constructed like a zipper, descend, climb the descent then ride the ridge to the next descent.  Could be ridden clockwise or counter clockwise. Endless bailout options. Never more than 10 miles from the start.

6.4% grade (based on their more precise figures and not their roundoffs)

distance: .816 miles
start elevation: 1322'
end elevation: 1597'
net gain: 275'

look at the profile. there are no dips on this route!

10.0% grade (however, a friend of mine got 9.2% using his altimeter, a more accurate #, imo.)

Using bikemap's more precise #'s (not their round-offs):
distance: .492 miles
start elevation: 987'
end elevation: 1246'
net gain: 259'

At 101 miles you will have climbed 20,000ft, all the rest is descending. There is almost no flat, very little under 10% and at 80 miles and 16,000 ft you face 1 mile that includes 26% with 3 steep climbs after that. This is the most brutal 100 miles I've ever done. I may never do it again! Not really recommending it... but it's there. It does have great scenery. Total mileage is actually 107 miles.

From Home until Skyline just drops - so return from the northernmost local maxima.

4 miles each way with some traffic & short hills.

Nice long uphills until grizzly where it flattens out.

Then a good descent down claremont

This loop has a great mixture of terrains, roads and views... from suburban busy streets, to Redwood trees, to hilltop grand views of the east bay with San Francisco across the bay.

From Lake Merritt Oakland to South Gate of Mt. Diablo.  Back down to Walnut Creek Bart Station.

Good training ride, using Broadway Terrace to go over the hills, a long, flatish ride through Orinda, Moraga, and Canyon, then a climb up Pinehurst.

Do you like climbing? How about trees interspersed with rich-wanker subdivisions and weirdo drop-out villages? Then you are going to love this.

Goes up two of the "Berkeley Death Hills", Claremont and South Park Dr.

A long ride with a few good climbs. This route includes a double-back on Estates Dr. in a rich wanker neighborhood. You can cut that one out if you're feeling more intelligent than I was, but it's a good climb nonetheless.

A delightful jaunt into the East Bay Hills going up Park, Butters, Redwood, and Pinehurst.

Includes climbs up Claremont, Joaquin Miller, and Pinehurst.

North Oakland starting point, encompasses the most of both Skyline and Redwood.

Some steep climbs but pleasant ride from Macarthur and Lincoln Ave in Oakland (downhill from Mormon Temple) over Skyline and Grizzly Peak, down Wildcat, up Bear Creek and Happy Valley, down to Lafayette, then to Moraga and up back to Oakland. Bring plenty of water, don't rush it.

The actual route went along the Iron Horse Trail between San Ramon and Alamo, but I can't indicate this with the technology at my disposal.

Route leads from North Oakland to the 3 Bears via Tunnel, Grizzly Peak, and Wildcat Canyon; then returns through the crap towns of Orinda and Moraga and the awesome Pinehurst Rd.

Based on my Sir Climbs-a-Lot route, but with Centennial Dr. replacing Broadway Terr.

Enjoy June 5th, Maxwell Park 1st Sunday ride to JLS ProArts Open Studio at former Barnes & Nobel, and JLS Farmers Market.

Start at 10, we'll be open for business at 11. Stop by RIchard Leon & Pat Patterson's booths, two of the 43 artists exhibiting!

I will be at JLS (NOT RIDING) and have cable and lock to secure your bikes while you enjoy the art and Square. Bring a backpack.
