Routes in United States / California / Sunnyvale

Sunnyvale Town Center to Stevens Creek Reservoir

I did this one on Saturday. It's a challenge climbing up Montebello road, but you can stop at Ridge Winery and refill water bottles. The dirt road was ridable on a road bike, but you'll be doing a bit of gravel surfing, and I had to walk the last climb, which is a steep hill with gravel. But the freewheel down Page Mill is well worth the effort!

Be on the lookout for the Moody Road turning off Page Mill. I missed it and had to continue to Aratradero.

says

Montebello Road is a dead-end to cars through open space preserves and is thus an excellent cycling route, especially for climbing. It has extended sections at a 9% grade with an intermediate false-flat of approximately 0.7 miles. At the end of the pavement, the road continues beyond a gate as a semi-paved fire road for several rolling miles before connecting with Page Mill Road. This section and the paths which connect to it are popular with mountain bikes, but the route is quite fun and ridable for road bikers as well, if a little skill is exercised. Much of the rutted dirt which previously presented a hazard to road bikes has been cleared away, making what was once a challenging-but-ridable road slightly less challenging. It connects with Page Mill near Page Mill's summit.

50 miler from Sunnyvale to Crystal Springs and back. Not much climbing.

Variation on the Sunnyvale to Crystal Springs half century.

Very flat. This route avoids Brokaw I-880 underpass, because there is no bike lane there.

Somewhat challenging circuit from Sunnyvale to Mountain View, up Grant to Foothill, past Stevens Creek Reservoir, and up Stevens Canyon Road. Then via the punishing Redwood Gulch Road to Highway 9 up to Skyline. North on Skyline to Page Mill, and a fun descent, with a sharp turn off at Moody. Back down Moody to Foothill, and back via Grant, Fremont and Hollenbeck.

Route has rolling hills. First part of route follows the Stevens Creek Trail for 2.5 miles before entering surface street.  The route ends on the Stevens Creek Trail as well.

Hwy 9 - Skyline - Pagemill Rd-Foothill. Nice climb up Hwy to Skyline Blvd to Page Mill Rd. Technical descent on Page Mill Rd.

Mostly level with a few hills. Return trip on a summer afternoon is a long slog into the wind.
