Routes in United States / Minnesota / Saint Paul

South St. Anthony Park to Mpls. Warehouse Dist.

Two-way bicycle lanes beyond Dinkytown are unusual, but useful. Bicycle/Ped bridge over 35W is a safe, simple crossing. Bicycle paths on W River Road = 10 mph; W River Road = 25 mph. Bicycle/Ped path allows  crossing from 1st St. to 2nd St.

Since bikemap.net wouldn't allow mapping on the Gateway Trail, there are two routes to get you from SE Minneapolis to near Prairie Farm, Wisconsin.  There are numerous sources of existing maps for the Gateway.

Also of note, we chose to ride through Glenwood City near the end of the ride to find a decent bite to eat. There really isn't much for food out this way.

If I were riding this again, I would've ridden more along 130th than on County Road E, as 130th had less traffic.

From Snelling and Summit to Falon on Marquette via Greenway, LRT.

At Shady Oak & Excelisor use south side sidewalk to access Pioneer Road

From Roselawn and Edgerton to downtown Minneapolis via Gateway Trail, Wheelock Pkwy, Como/Horton, Transitway.

Once we get to the 35E Bridge bikeway, follow one of the nicest bike trails in the TC area.

Expect hills with any perpendicular travel to the River. And the contrary… nice and flat traveling with the River.

Path along side White Bear ave to Buerkle to Bruce Vento trail. Catch gateway trail to north of DT and then cedar in to 4th st  E

When coming upon Frost Ave from Phalen Place, cross over Frost Ave to meet up with the Gateway Bike Trail. Take this all the way to the street Cayuga where the trail ends.

Beginning at the Wabasha Street Bridge, there are nice bike lanes extending along Wabasha, Cesar Chavez, and Concord before ending at Annapolis Street.  Te shoulder of Concord should be fine to connect the gap between the end of the bike lanes and Kaposia Park.

At Kaposia Park, cut through the parking lot and get on the bike trail that crosses over Concord on a pedestrian-style bridge.  This is the South Saint Paul segment of the North Urban Regional Trail system.  Follow the trail until you see an obvious ramp and bridge allowing you to cross the tracks and leave the trail at Grand Avenue.

  • From Midway Pkwy and Snelling Ave. N. follow the bike lane ON Midway Pkwy (east) to Como Park.
  • The bike lane will meet up with Horton Ave. Continue on Horton Ave (heading east). Go past Laxington Pkwy. N., past Churchill St. and Como Blvd. W. to Gateway Dr.
  • Follow Gateway Dr. to W. Como Ave. and turn right (southwest).
  •  Follow W. Como Ave. to N. Western Ave. and turn right onto N. Western Ave (south).
  • Follow N. Western Ave. to Selby Ave. and turn left (east).
  • The YWCA will be approximately 1/2 block east of the Western and Selby intersection on the north side of Selby Ave.

Take St. Paul Avenue to  Cleveland. Turn left at Ford Parkway. Take Ford Parkway across the Mississippi River to East 46th Street. Take Edmund Blvd to the right. At 44th Street make a slight right turn to West River Parkway. There is a bike path along the river or ride in the road. The road is narrow and some car drivers don't like bikers in the roadway. If you are fast the road might be better. Follow West River Parkway north under Lake Street to E. 24th Avenue. Turn left and follow 24th Avenue to 26th Avenue. Turn right at 26th Avenue to Franklin.

Lower Afton leads to Point Douglas Rd. Cross under Hwy 61 on bike trail and follow trail along river. Good luck bike commuting.

A shorter though much more hillier route would be to take the Smith Ave Bridge to Grand Ave and turn left to either go up Ramsey Hill or take a quick left before the hill and go up Grand Ave, which is not so steep, but the left turn can be tricky in traffic.

Another option (less direct) for traveling North/South would be to take Victoria (2 blocks east of Chatsworth) which has lights at the major intersection crossings of Summit and Grand.

I drew this as a round trip.  The leg from Kipling to 7th I drew as the pleasant no pressure route.  Much of it's path is segregated off road bike paths and it avoids some of the climbs.  The leg from 7th to Kipling I drew as the brave road warrior route who's late for dinner and can climb through Mounds Park like a TDF champ.  Pick the leg you like best or mix it up based on how you feel.

The mapped route puts you on Minnehaha Parkway, but if you turn just after crossing Hwy 55 onto the bike path, then turn again at Godfrey Pkwy, you will have a very pleasant bike path that will take you all the way to Humboldt and the road rooute from there to the end of your commute.

The route follows Minnehaha Parkway, but you can stay on the bike path all the way to Humboldt.

Use the bike lane on Marshall up to Western (Marshall turns into a 1-way the wrong way at this point).  Turn right onto Western, and left Selby.  When you get to the Cathedral, turn left onto Summit/John Ireland Blvd and take the bike lane towards the capital.  You can eithr walk you rbike through the park to get to Cedar St or bike further up to Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, and take that to Cedar St.  Cedar St does not have a bike lane, but there are wide lanes.  Take a right onto Exchange St E, ride 2.5 blocks.

Take Jefferson west to Grigg St, and take a right.  Follow Griggs, which will turn into Fairmount Ave as it veers left.  Go right onto Syndicate (lower traffic than Hamline) and go left onto Lincoln.  Take a right onto Hamline to cross Grand at the light to get to Summit Ave.  Take a left on Summit and use the bike lane all the way to Mississippi River Blvd.  Sharp right on either the bike path on the West side of the Blvd or stay on the road.  At the top of the hill, veer left at the fork in the road, and cross Missippi River Blvd to get to Exeter Pl.  Take a quick right onto Otis Ave, a low traffic residential road which winds downhill to Marshall.  (Note: Otis has speed bumps which should be fine to roll over on your bike.)  Take a left onto Marshall, go over the bridge and take a right onto W. River Pkwy.  Continue north on W. River Pkwy either on the bike path (on the West side of the street) or on the road.  Enter onto the Midtown Greenway at 27th St.  Take the Midtown Greenway until the Nicollet exit which is a sharp right. (note: when crossing Hiawatha, use the bike bridge to your right).  At the top of the Nicollet exit, take a left, and bike North on Nicollet until 24th Street.  Take a right and bike 3 blocks to the Theater.

Take Highland Pkwy west to Mississippi River Blvd and head north either on the road or on the bike/ped path on the west side of the street.  After about 7 or 8 miles, take a right onto Harvard (which is right by Fairview Hospital) and arrive at Harvard and Washington, U of MN Eastbank Campus.

Take Mississippi River Blvd north until you reach the Marshall/Lake Bridge.  Continue biking under the bridge, then take the first right after the bridge to back track up to Marhshall Ave.  Take a right to head west across the bridge.  Once on the west side of the bridge, take a right onto W River Pkwy.  Continue on W River Pkwy until you reach 11th Avenue, where you take a left and take the bikelane to 5th St (Just past the Metrodome).  Take a right onto 5th St, bike past the Metrodome onward a few blocks to Portland Avenue (note, 5th St does not have a bike lane but the traffic is usually navigable).  Take a left on Portland ( which has a bike lane) to your destination.

Take Jefferson west to Fairview and take a right.  Take the Fairview bike lane to Marshall Ave, and take a left onto Marshall's bike lane.  Continue west on Marshall, cross the Marshall/Lake bridge.  Once on the west side of the bridge, take a right onto West River Pkwy.  You can either bike on the road on West River Pkwy or use the bike/pedestrian path on the east side of the street.  Continue north on West River Pkwy until you reach 11th Avenue.  Take a left onto 11th Avenue which has a bike lane.  Take a right onto 5th St (note: there is not a bike lane on 5th St but traffic should be manageable and it's only a few blocks to Portland)  Take a left onto Portland which has a bike lane.  Take a right onto 9th St which has a bike lane.  At Nicollet Mall, walk your bike 1 bock to the left to reach US Bancorp (if it is not between 6am and 6pm, you may ride your bike on Nicollet Mall).

This route is suitable for the morning (before 8:00), when traffic on University Ave is very light.

I take this home from work in the afternoon. I say partly hilly, because it's all up hill.

Note: Route shows Minnehaha Parkway through south Minneapolis. You can use the bike path that runs the entire lenght of Minnehaha to Humboldt.

Go east on Lydia to Hamline Avenue. Turn right at Hamline and follow Hamline until you reach Hoyt  Avenue. Turn left at Hoyt Avenue. At Lexington Pkwy. turn right and continue down the hill around the curve through the golf course to the Como Pavillion and Black Bear Crossing.

There is a designated bike lane. Follow Como past the Fair Grounds until you reach the Intercampus Trailway. Turn left and follow the road. You will ride in the road until you reach Energy Park Drive. At this point you can either ride in the road or on the bike path. Continue on the road until you reach the Gopher Football Stadium. Turn left at 23rd Avenue SE. At University Avenue turn right and follow the road as it curves to the right and becomes Huron Blvd. Huron becomes 4th Street SE and a one way road. The bike path is on the left side of the road. Continue on through Dinky Town. Two blocks past 35W turn left at 7th Avenue SE. Go two blocks to 2nd St SE and turn right. Go one block to 6th Avenue SE and turn left on to the Stone Arch Bridge. Cross the bridge. Turn left at the end of the bridge and exit out of the parking lot and directly across West River Rd. to the bike ramp next to the building. Go up the ramp and connect to S. 1st St. Continue on 1st St. past the post office to Hennepin. At Hennepin turn left. The bike path on Hennepin is in the center of the road—cars on one side and buses on the other side. Continue on Hennepin to 6th Street and turn left to your destination.

The route is long but provides some choice.

If County Rd C is not that busy and you are comfortable on it, you can try staying on it the entire way, instead of looping north toward Owasso Blvd.

Both St Anthony Pkwy and Victory Memorial Drive have a bike path as an option to the road (roads are supposed to have low speed limits).

Take Radio Drive north where it becomes Inwood Avenue. Continue on Inwood until you reach Stillwater Blvd (6). Turn left on Stillwater Blvd to Ideal Avenue North. Ideal becomes Olson Lake Trail. Follow Olson Lake Trail around the lake to 50th St. N. Turn right. The road curves to the left and becomes Demontreville Trail N. Follow Demontreville Trail around the lake until you reach Highlands Trail North. Turn left up the hill to Hytrail Av. N and turn left. Follow around until you reach the bike path on your left next to a parking lot. Take this trail to the Gateway Trail. It goes through a little forest and suddenly comes out on the Gateway. Turn right on the Gateway and go through the tunnel under Highway 36. Just past the tunnel turn to the left off the trail to a hairpin turn up to a gravel parking lot. Follow the road (60th St.N) out to Hilton Trail. Turn right on Hilton Trail and turn left at the next intersection, 62nd St. North. Take 62nd to Warner Avenue. Take Warner Avenue to 75th St. N/Stillwater Road. Turn left and follow Stillwater Road through Mahtomedi until you reach  Wildwood Road/244. Turn left and continue on Wildwood/244 past Wildwood Pond and up the hill where the road become County Road E. Follow County Road E passing White Bear Avenue, Highway 61, 35E. At Centerville Road turn left. Follow Centerville Road. At the next intersection Centerville becomes Vadnais Blvd. Go straight ahead on Vadnais Blvd. around Lake Vadnais. The road curves around the lake through a forest and through the lake. Up the hill is Rice Street. Turn left at Rice Street and cross over 694. At North Owasso Blvd. turn right. Follow North Owasso past Lake Owasso on your left and continue around the lake until you reach Victoria. Turn right on Victoria Street. Follow Victoria around until you reach County Road E West. Turn left and continue on County Road E to your destination.

This route gives plenty of options since the distance is so long.  The route mapped relies mostly on bike paths and trails.  Pilot Knob has paths on both sides of the road but caution should be taken as the path crosses busy intersections and driveways.

The path continues through Ft Snelling and up onto the Hiawatha Trail, where you will ride next to the light rail practically to downtown.

If traffic is not a concern, it would be possible to take Sibley Hwy (13) to the Mendota bridge, but you would have to rely on a shoulder.

Another option is to take the light rail from the 494 bridge crossing.  The crossing ends in a cul-de-sac where you can get on the road (E 80th/American Blvd) and follow the road to a stop light.  If you take a left onto 34th Ave/Old Shakopee there will be a path to get to a light rail station.

Follow Jackson down the hill across University Av and across I94 into downtown St. Paul. Continue to E. 7th St. and turn right. Go three blocks to Cedar St. and your destination.

Takes advantage of the campus transitway, bike lane on 4th St and Stone Arch Bridge crossing.

Take the Dean Pkwy exit from the Greenway.  There is a bike trail that goes between the one-way Dean Pkwys to drop off at Cedar Lake Pkwy.  After the railroad tracks, there is another bike path all the way north to Theo Wirth.

The bike path crosses the road at the intersection of Cedar Lake Pkwy and Cedar Lake Rd.

I have drawn two routes here which diverge at the intersection of Front and Como Ave.  The first takes Front and is the northern route.  This route goes through a neighborhood and is generally quiet with some climbs but the north/south routes east of 35E are being resurfaced so it is kind of gravelly.

I drew the second route coming from the destination point, taking the Bruce Ventro trail through downtown St. Paul.  If you don't mind riding in traffic, 7th St E is a pretty straight shot but the traffic is high.   If you wanted to choose the more southern route that goes through downtown St. Paul, be sure to note that on the way to the destination, you would take Cedar St to E 5th St to get to 4th St E and on the return would be the mapped version of 6th St E to Minnesota St.  This is due to the one-way on those roads.

Go west on 9th St. to Otter Lake Rd. Turn left and follow Otter Lk. Rd. to Goose Lk. Rd. Turn right at Goose Lake Road and follow past the golf course and along Gem Lake to the end of the road. At Labore Rd. there is a slight jog to the right across the RR track and then left on Goose Lk Rd under the 35E bridge. At the next corner turn left at Centerville Rd. Follow Centerville Rd. until you reach Edgerton. Turn left at Edgerton. Continue on Edgerton south over 694/35E and past Little Canada Rd. Continue on past Lake Gervais and up the hill over Hwy. 36. Continue on past  Roselawn and Forest Hills Cemetery. Just past the cemetery is the Gateway Trail. Turn right on to the Gateway Trail. Follow the Gateway Trail to its starting point at Cayuga St. Go straight ahead on L'Orient. It will curve to the right and become E. Acker St. Take Acker St. to Jackson St. and turn left. Follow Jackson St. into downtown St. Paul and to your destination.

Century Ave/Geneva Ave does have a shoulder but is a busier road but can be used if comfortable with traffic. The route could be Century --> Minnehaha Ave --> Johnson Pkwy.

In order to continue on Victoria, you will have to cross Larpenteur at the stoplight.

There is a bike path that runs next to Lexington which is advised as it is a busy road.

There is a bike bridge that crosses the rail yard, which you can access from Energy Park Dr.

I have included 2 routes.  The first takes Wheelock Pkwy to Victoria St.  Cross Larpenteur at the light in order to continue on Victoria.  County Rd C has a bike path on the south side of the road.

A more scenic route can be taken by turning onto Co Rd B from Victoria.  This will take you to a trail that runs through Villa Park, starting slightly east of Dale.  This travels to McCarron Blvd where you can ride to meet the start of the Trout Brook Trail (starts after crossing Rice St.).  This ends at Jackson and Arlington.

On the return trip, will have to take Cedar St south to Kellogg and then turn right to get onto Wabasha to cross the bridge.

This route will include quite a lot of street riding. Kellogg is far superior to 7th St, as traffic is much more tolerant of cyclists on the wider lanes of Kellogg. Summit provides an excellent early-morning ride. ~9 mi each way

This route uses Como Ave all the way to Bethesda Hospital. From there, various downtown routes may be used.

A nice ride from home .  There's a short span on the gateway to help get out of the busy streets, but once in Oakdale, it's all good.  The stretch from Lake Elmo north is my favorite.

Wide shoulder on entire route.

At 4:30 in the morning this is a smooth quiet ride down the middle of the street with hardly any traffic mostly up and down the whole way. At 3:30 in the afternoon it's packed with fast traffic hardly any shoulder to ride in and bumpy.
