Routes in United States / Texas / Austin
This is the best route I've found for going from Wells Branch to downtown. I take it once a week and it usually takes 1.25 hours. I then take the 935 bus home.
The route is hilly at first, but turns in to a gradual descent the closer you get to town.
Take Metric to 183.
Go east along 183 frontage road/sidewalk for .25 miles
Go under 183 at Burnet intersection, into Chili's parking lot. Go north through parking lot, along 183, past Tabu, BagPipes, to McCann Dr.
Take nice ride down hill Shoal Creek to w38th Street. Go along shoal creek trails for a few blocks until Shoal Creek Blvd appears again. Take Shoal Creek Blvd/ W31st to N Lamar Blvd.
Take N Lamar Blvd south (west sidewalk). At 15th street, find Shoal Creek trail again. This time take it all the way down to 5th street. There are stairs at 15 street you can use to exist shoal creek trail.
You can also take Shoal creek trail down to 3rd street or all the way to Lady Bird lake.
It's just under 9 miles, walking (why? when you can bike it!!) You can hardly see the Austin skyline and you're only a few miles of the airport. Traffic is pretty moderate in the day time, at evening rush it can make you think twice about your car/suv, if you even own one!!
Longer, but more fun (less stopping)!
This map goes to and from San Marcos and Austin, through Buda and Kyle.
biggest hill: on steck crossing mopac to mesa
had to cross a field to get to the 360 mopac crosswalk
95% bike laned, except for a somewhat perilous 360 crossing from Jollyville (we cut across the construction field).
Completed: 9/6/2010
From Quack's Bakery at 43rd and Duval St. All bike laned.
Buda being a bit too far...
And the Old San Antonio Road being too dark and creepy
Completed: 9/13/2010
Return in the day time!
The tri loop has some extra long hills!! I rode a geared bike for this one.
