roads, fast riding, hiilly
This is basically just a 15 mile to and back ride with a couple of long grades. It is a good ride for hill practice on limited time.
The portion between Everett and LaConner is very flat, the rest is moderate hills. One could choose a more scenic backroad route thru Whidbey Island but it would add more miles and bigger hills. Don't miss the candy shop in LaConner. Get a good meal at the cafe in Silvana.
See Point No Point Lighthouse on N. Kitsap, Point Wilson Lighthouse at Port Townsend, Admiralty Head Lighthouse at Ft. Casey SP on Whidbey Island, and Mukilteo Lighthouse. Three ferry rides give ample time to rest along the way. The Bikemap mileage counter does not deduct ferry travel, so subtract about 15 miles for true distance.
Also utilizes a portion of the Interurban Trail in Everett. New connector between 156th trailhead and City of Arlington scheduled for completion by 2012. Beware Centennial Trail congestion on weekends with nice weather. Only big hill is from Everett to Snohomish River Valley.
Whidbey's rural scenery is outstanding. Major culvert washout on Glendale Rd. requires difficult stream crossing. Not impossible. Be sure to sample some baked goods in Langley. Bikemap does not differentiate mileage for ferry routes, so subtract about 6 miles for true distance. Ignore the "Road Closed" signs on S. Wilkerson Rd. There is a pedestrian/biker gate to let us through.
Good trip if you don't mind a bit of traffic here and there. A real mixed bag as far as shoulders / no shoulders, also. Have some Fudge in LaConner and forget all that. Stop at the Snow Goose Produce stand on Fir Island Rd. for fresh fruits and veggies, fire-baked pizza and ice cream cones too! Dodge Valley Rd. is chip-seal :( all others are fine.
This route takes advantage of the Interurban and Burke-Gilman trails, the latter of which can be quite congested most nice days. The biggest hill is in Juanita but other than that one, this route is mostly flat. There is a sporadic bike trail NE of Renton that goes alonside SR405. Use it where you can.
Apologies to all you hard-core, long-distance, any-kind-of-weather commuters. This commute is short and sweet and I love it that way. Makes me feel less guilty for taking the car on rainy days:)
Ride takes you through scenic East Snohomish County. The East half of this ride is hilly and there is a big hill from Everett down to the Snohomish River Valley.
