Hicks Road is steep with several cattle guard crossings: a very tough climb on its own right. Indeed as soon as the road crosses Guadalupe Creek, it begins a super-tough 15% grade and never really lets up much from that. Make the left turn onto Loma Almaden and you double your pleasure. Loma Almaden is a wonderful addition to this climb, steep (12% sustained) but not as brutal as Hicks which preceded it.
The climb is probably over when you hit the closed gate, at least until the roads which follow are open to public access.
The climbs as shown is as planned for the 2010 Low-Key Hillclimbs. A version starting at Camden was used in the 1996 series.
