The Passo del Foscagno (2991mt) connects Bormio to Livigno. It is usually part of longer tours such as (1) Tirano - Bernina - Livigno - Foscagno - Bormio, or (2)Bormio - Foscgno - Switzerlan - Tubre - Santa Maria - Umbail Pass - Bormio.
This pass is open all year round. Be prepared to high traffic; Livigno is a duty free area that attracts a lot of tourists ;)
The uphill starts in Isolaccia and continue through the little villages of Semogo, San Carlo, Arnoga. You will then enter into a different landscape made up of pine and larch woods.
At the level of 2000mt the scenario is more essential. Threes are absent; the terrain is rockyand your left side you will see the so called “paravalanghe” (avalanche stoppers) used to stop possible avalanches in winter time. For the same reason a few tunnels have been built in the sixties. They are all open galleries and will create no problem to cyclists. After the last tunnel you can already see the top of passo del Foscagno wich is not only a pass. Although both sides of the pass are in the same country, Italy, you are required to pass through customs at the top. This is due to the duty free status of Livigno.
