Drauradweg (Drava Cycle Path)

A classic riverside ride that follows the Drava (Drau) from the Dolomites through East Tyrol and Carinthia, then on into Slovenia and Croatia. Think big mountain backdrops at the start, then mellow river valleys, lakes, and historic towns like Lienz and Villach along the way.

The route is mostly paved and well signposted (R1 in Austria), with long stretches on dedicated cycleways and quiet roads. You’ll hit some gravel and track sections too, so wider tires make it comfy. Overall it’s pretty gentle—ride west to east for a slight downhill feel—and it’s perfect for touring bikes, families, and anyone who likes rolling scenery without hardcore climbing.

Logistics are easy: there are frequent trains along the valley (handy for one-way stages), plenty of places to refuel, and lots of spots to swim or linger by the river. Popular season is late spring to autumn.

Expect a relaxed, cross-border adventure with varied surfaces, river views on repeat, and plenty of café stops. Pack a camera, maybe a swimsuit, and enjoy the flow of the Drava.
