A little tour following (more or less) the Camino del Norte from Santander to Ribadesella. My point of arrival was the Brittany Ferry Terminal in Santander .... a very short distance from the centre of the city itself.

It turned out to be more demanding due to heatwave which curtailed the cycing element by two days. The sections from San Vicente de la Barquera to Llanes and Llanes to Ribadesella, on Days 3 and 4 were both replaced by train journeys. On completion of the tour, train journeys were taken back to Santander once more.

The routes are a mixture of quite roads and tracks. Some of the latter would best be avoided after prolonged spells of rain.

Day 2, Santillana Del Mar - San Vicente de la Barquera

A more demanding route on leaving Santillana del Mar can be continued, if preferred, on the CA-131 with its easier gradients and ample shoulder for safe cycling. The town of Comillas is well worth a stop for its lovely sandy beach, its cafés / bars / restaurants and for sight-seeing.

Day 3, San Vicente de la Barquera - Llanes

This route was planned but due to excessively high temperatures and little in the way of shade, was replaced by a train taken from the unmanned station near San Vicente de la Barquera to Llanes; an interesting journey itself. Tickets can be bought on the train.

Day 4, Llanes - Ribadesella

With no let up in the heatwave conditions, the planned route was again replaced by train. The journey from near the centre of Llanes offered lovely views; sandy bays on the Bay of Biscay and rural villages and the mountains of Asturias. Ribadesella is a lovely town with much to recommend.
