The small church near Lake Canterno was built in 1695. Destroyed by a flood on December 8, 1772, it was rebuilt and consecrated in 1774. On October 2 of the following year, the fresco removed from the ruins of the older building, located higher up on Mount Porciano, was placed in the rebuilt church. Tradition holds that the location was chosen because the pious spinster of Anticoli, Felicia Colarossi, saw the Madonna appear there in April 1690. In the same place, Antonio da Alatri, while watching his mare, laden with pots and pans, drown in the nearby lake, heard a voice shouting to him: "Command in the name of Mary that all danger vanish." He obeyed the voice, and the mare was saved. Shepherd Sebastiano Ambrosi, from Anticoli, who was nearby, heard the heavenly voice coming from the woods of Mount Porciano and, driven by curiosity, wanted to go and see: on a large boulder, he found an image of the Madonna with the inscription "Ave Maris Stella."

It's very interesting to listen to the description provided by an excellent guide about it and its connections with the Knights Templar, who left numerous traces of their presence in the town. The ticket price (5 euros) also includes a visit with an explanation of the frescoes in the nearby church of San Francesco and the museum.
