Bikepacking from Chiayi City to Kaohsiung City

Set off from the historic city of Chiayi, famous as the gateway to Alishan and home to Taiwan’s renowned turkey rice, and head south all the way to the vibrant port city of Kaohsiung. This journey covers roughly 153 km, making it a solid day out for experienced cyclists or a pleasant overnight trip for those who want to take it at a leisurely pace.

You’ll gradually make your way out of Chiayi’s urban jungle, rolling over mostly flat terrain through the fertile plains of southern Taiwan. The ride features a nice mix of cycleways (about half the route!) and quiet roads, allowing for long, relaxed stretches with only gentle hills along the way – never topping 100 meters in elevation. Most of the surface is paved or asphalt, though don’t be surprised by the occasional rough patch.

As you glide into Kaohsiung, you’ll be greeted by its sprawling harbor and famous Love River. Take some time to soak in the city’s relaxed vibe and lively night markets – a perfect reward after a long, beautiful ride down Taiwan’s western corridor.
