Cycling day trip from Villach to Gemona

This bike ride takes you from the vibrant Austrian town of Villach down to the charming Italian city of Gemona, covering just under 100 km of beautiful alpine and foothill scenery. You’ll start in Villach, nestled at the meeting point of the Drau, Gail, and Villach rivers — it’s a lively spot, known for its colorful old town and easy-going atmosphere. From there, you’ll head south, weaving your way through the dramatic landscapes of the Carnic Alps, with substantial climbing (over 1,500 meters of ascent!) but even more descent as you drop toward Italy.

Most of the route rolls along smooth cycleways and quiet roads, making for a relaxing and scenic ride (with over 70% on well-maintained cycle paths). You’ll cross the border into Italy and finish in Gemona, a historic town rebuilt after the 1976 earthquake. Its skyline is dominated by the medieval cathedral and views of the Julian Alps.
