Cycling day trip from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden

Ready for a stunning cross-border ride? This 34 km cycling route takes you from Salzburg, Austria’s baroque jewel and the birthplace of Mozart, down to the charming Bavarian town of Berchtesgaden, nestled in the Alps. You’ll start pedaling through Salzburg’s graceful old town, famous for its music, fortress views, and riverside paths.

The route covers mostly smooth, paved or asphalt surface (over 85%), winding along cycle paths and quiet roads. About half the journey follows dedicated cycling paths, making it easy to take in views of rolling hills, lush meadows, and distant peaks.

Brace yourself for some uphill stretches—the total ascent adds up to about 528 meters—rewarding you with dramatic mountain scenery as you approach Germany. Once you cross the border, it's a gentle roll down into Berchtesgaden, known for its alpine flair and easy access to the legendary Königssee lake and the Eagle’s Nest.
