Cycling day trip from Magdeburg to Braunschweig

This scenic ride takes you from the historic city of Magdeburg—famous for its stunning Gothic cathedral and the quirky Green Citadel by architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser—over to the vibrant university town of Braunschweig. The journey covers about 116 kilometers, so it’s a solid day trip (or a leisurely two-day adventure if you prefer to take it easy).

You’ll be mostly rolling along paved surfaces, passing through tranquil countryside, quiet roads, and plenty of relaxing cycle paths. There’s a bit of uphill (about 700 meters of ascent), but it’s nothing too taxing—it’s more rolling than mountainous.

As you approach Braunschweig, look out for its medieval old town and the impressive Brunswick Lion in the central square. Both cities have rich histories dating back to the Holy Roman Empire, so there’s plenty to explore at the start and finish.
