Cycling day trip from Chinon to Saumur

Ready for a gentle ride through the beautiful Loire Valley? This cycle route takes you from the charming medieval town of Chinon to the picturesque city of Saumur, covering almost 35 kilometers of mostly quiet roads and scenic countryside.

You’ll start in Chinon, famous for its fairytale château and local red wine. Heading north, the path winds through rolling vineyards and leafy stretches, mixing smooth paved sections (about a third of the way) with plenty of rustic gravel and unpaved bits—perfect for a bike built for light adventure. Be prepared for a few ups and downs, with just under 300 meters of ascent and descent, but nothing too steep.

By the time you roll into Saumur, you’ll be treated to another stunning château overlooking the Loire, and if you’re feeling fancy, you can celebrate with some of the sparkling wine the area is known for. It’s a leisurely ride, packed with vineyard views, riverside glimpses, and real French countryside charm. Bring a picnic and take it easy!
