Cycling day trip from Umag to Piran

Set off from Umag, a lively coastal town in Croatia known for its blend of Venetian history and Adriatic charm, and enjoy a beautiful ride north up the coast to Piran, Slovenia’s postcard-perfect gem. This route is around 31 km and delivers a bit of a workout, with about 450 meters of climbing—think gentle hills rather than big mountain slogs.

You’ll spend much of the ride on quiet country roads and scenic tracks, sometimes veering onto easy gravel sections, with the sea peeking through olive groves and vineyards. There are some stretches on cycle paths and a tiny bit of busier road, but for most of the route it’s just you, your bike, and the winding roads.

Don’t rush—this is a perfect route to take in the views, maybe stop in one of the sleepy villages for an espresso, and soak up the vibe as you cross into Slovenia. When you roll into Piran, you’ll be welcomed by its charming harbor, Venetian architecture, and maybe a gelato on Tartini Square. It’s a fantastic cross-border ride with a lovely mix of coast, countryside, and culture.
