Mit der Ausweisung eines ca. 800 ha umfassenden Gebietes inmitten des größtenteils fiskalischen Kummersdorfer Forstes wurde im Jahre 1875 der Grundstein für einen der bedeutendsten militärischen Entwicklungs- und Erprobungsstätten in Deutschland gelegt. Mit der fortschreitenden technischen Entwicklung war eine Ausbau des Geländes bis zu einer Größenordnung von ca. 2500 ha erforderlich.

Am Ort befand sich bis 1945 die Heeresversuchsanstalt Kummersdorf der Wehrmacht, welche dort ein Entwicklungs- und Erprobungszentrum für neue Waffensysteme betrieb.
