2026 Romanja Trsat

The route takes us first from Žirov toward Logatec. In Podklanc the first longer climb toward Rovte begins, but it is not very demanding. This is followed by a descent and a short flat section to Logatec. In Logatec we head for Kalce and reach them after a few kilometres. There we turn off and continue toward Postojna. After a short flat stretch comes a descent to Planina (in some places the road surface is in poor condition). There we partly avoid the hairpins by turning into the village of Strmec, then after a very short climb we rejoin the road to Postojna. Three hairpins still separate us from the top; with that behind us we have completed the second climb of the entire route. A short descent and climb and we are already in Postojna. From Postojna we head for Ilirska Bistrica. In Pivka you can choose between two variants. The first runs through the valley of the river Reka. That section is flat, with longer descents and gentle short climbs. Up to the village of Pivka the road descends or is mostly flat. From Pivka on the road runs for a while through woodland and is mostly downhill. A few kilometres before Ilirska Bistrica it rises slightly. That section is only somewhat challenging in a strong headwind. Alternatively you can head toward Šembije. If you choose that option you face a 3 km climb to Šembije. But don’t worry: the climb isn’t very hard and it’s followed by a nice descent into Ilirska Bistrica. In Ilirska Bistrica we take the roundabout and turn right toward Zabiče. We cycle through Jasen, Vrbovo, Vrbica, Jablanica, Zabiče, Sušak and Novokračina. Then on to the Jelšane border crossing, where we cross the state border into the Republic of Croatia. Immediately after crossing the border we turn right onto the signed cycle path. This takes us to the village of Rupa. We continue on the old main road toward Rijeka, which is quiet because the motorway runs alongside. The road is wide and mostly downhill. Because of Trsat’s location you need to cycle through the town lengthwise first, which adds about 12 km. In town watch for traffic lights, rude drivers and pedestrians. The road presents several short ramps (bridges, flyovers). On the direction signs first follow the signs for the centre, then, once you reach it, the signs for the island of Krk. Shortly after passing through Rijeka we arrive at the turnoff for Trsat. The road begins with a climb, which is the third and final climb of the whole route. Just follow the direction signs (local signs, not the ones for the shrine, since those lead to the other side of the town wall and require a short walk on rough gravel).
