Haleakalā National Park Cycling

Inside the national park, the Headquarters Visitor Center offers restrooms and parking. We parked here to cycle to the Haleakalā Summit Visitor Center, at 9,740 feet (2,969 meters).

The 9.5-mile uphill journey to the summit was challenging. We rode our Brompton C Line 6 speed bikes. Weather can change rapidly, so dress in layers. We packed water and snacks to fuel our ascent.

The narrow two-lane winding road has a low speed limit and there were signs to alert drivers to watch for cyclists. We encountered courteous drivers who gave us ample clearance.

The descent from the volcano crater was exhilarating but you have to use caution. Rocks occasionally roll onto the pavement. There were no guardrails, so we had to be cautious while enjoying a fast return trip to our parked vehicle.
