There are nice bits on this route, but the shared pavement/cycle track through Kempston is difficult. In parts both the footpath and cycle path (which are clearly defined) are filled with belligerent pedestrians who appear to hate cyclists more than Jeremy Clarkson. The majority are foul-mouthed mums with herds of kids/dogs, aimlessly milling around;Â if you're careful you might not knock down too many.
At Stewartby Lakes (AKA Forest Centre, but that is wishful thinking - there are a few saplings dotted around) there is a section of track around the lakes which was a foot under water, there is an alternative high-ground path you can use (I didn't and got a bit messy). Nice gentleman at the hire centre let me use his jet-wash to find my bike under the mud & vegetation I acquired en-route.
The bike trail here was under about a foot of water, I did a very muddy detour through the woods, but the brown path would be on higher ground, so take that route!
