Haloze

Haloze is a pleasant world of strongly undulating, low tertiary hills of Pannonian Slovenia. The remote, borderland hilly region with limited prospects for survival was until recently considered one of the least developed areas of Slovenia. Haloze has always been an agricultural landscape, historically known for large families. Its population peaked after World War II, then was marked by emigration, and by 1991 the number of inhabitants had decreased by more than one-third. Forgotten and isolated for a long time, it is now slowly awakening. The name Haloze is first mentioned in the 15th century as Chalas and Kalosen. It is thought to derive from the Latin Colles, meaning vineyard hills, or from the Old Slavic word halonga, meaning hilly world.
