5. Etappe: Havanna - Rio San Juan CLONED FROM ROUTE 105009

One leaves La Habana heading west, the first 10 km through the suburbs have heavy traffic, which then noticeably decreases after Playa. The well-built coastal road to Mariel is flat and with the mostly prevailing easterly wind, it rolls nicely. At Mariel, one passes the dusty cement factory. Here, one must turn south to the Autopista. After about 5 km on the Autopista, there is a turnoff, which, however, is not signposted. This side road leads more or less directly gently up to Las Terrazas. From here, it goes down about 4 km to the idyllic Rio San Juan, where one can stay overnight in original stilt houses (reservation is advisable) and swim in the river.
