Cycling in Spain
Spain is known for its guitar music, tapas, flamenco and bull fights, but also for its landscapes and cities characterized by fascinating Catalan and Moorish influences. If you want to see for yourself what the fuss is all about, there is no better way to discover this multifaceted country than by bike. Head to stately Madrid, relaxed Barcelona, volcanic Tenerife or the beaches of Mallorca to experience the pride and hospitality of the Spanish people – or even ride the legendary Camino de Santiago on two wheels.
Discover Spain's coasts, islands and countryside
The sunny climate and a varied landscape of orange trees, perfect beaches and rugged mountains are enough to inspire anyone to dream of a Spanish holiday.
And once you consider the continuous improvements in local cycling infrastructure and the laid-back mentality fuelled by ruby rioja and delicious tapas, you'll be ready to pack your saddle bags.
Discover Spain's cities
There is no doubt Barcelona is great for cyclists. With one of the most popular (by numbers) bike share systems and lots of traffic-calming measures in place, the city famous for unfinished Gaudí buildings and shopping in La Rambla has ensured that bicycles are back in fashion in Spain.
The Spanish capital Madrid, by comparison, can pose a bit of a challenge for cyclists. While it is well worth a visit for its art in the Prado, its royal palaces and grand historical squares, the quality of its bike paths is currently not on its list of highlights.
An honorable mention should go to Seville. According to the Copenhagenize index, the Andalusian flamenco capital ranks as the 10th most bicycle-friendly city in the world – just after Barcelona – and that is thanks to a huge increase in segregated bike infrastructure over the recent years. Keep up the good work, Spain!
