How do you train for a triathlon and become an Ironman?

How do you train for a triathlon and become an Ironman?

Mario Fink's training tips

We asked someone who must know: 36-year-old Austrian athlete and trainer Mario Fink is a passionate swimmer, cyclist and runner who placed first and second in multiple professional triathlon races from Vienna to Mallorca. Such an achievement is not a matter of chance:

“You can’t succeed without enjoyment and a certain relaxed attitude. That’s a painful lesson I had to experience a few times. If you have confidence in your abilities and rely on yourself to deliver, the rest will follow.”

Finishing in second place in his age group at Ironman Mallorca in 2015 qualified him for the legendary Ironman Hawaii in Kona, which he has a real chance of winning in October 2016. Go, Mario!

You can cheer him on or support him here: I believe in you.

Greifenstein - Korneuburg

Vienna, Vienna, Austria
49km 320m 320m

Greifenstein

For best long-term improvement, it is advisable to increase your training gradually. Don't jump in with extremely long or challenging tours as soon as the first spring sunshine invites you outside. From Vienna, for example, the Greifenstein - Korneuburg loop is a good and healthy start.

Alternatively, keep up the basic training in winter. Either outside or, if you're sensitive like me, on the ergometer or the turbo trainer. Aim for many steady kilometers at a basic pace interspersed with more intense interval training.

Triathlon Podersdorf Mitteldistanz

Podersdorf am See, Burgenland, Austria

Podersdorf

It makes a lot of sense to train on actual competition routes. One of my all-time favorite routes is the Austria Triathlon in Podersdorf. Flat, windy, fast. My intimate knowledge of the route definitely helped me win the middle-distance last year.

Familiarizing myself with the Ironman route in Hawaii will be a little more challenging. But there are certain parallels between the two routes: easy in terms of technique, potentially very windy, and hopefully fast!

Apfelland Triathlon

Stubenberg, Styria, Austria
62km 840m 840m

Styria

As the race approaches, I like to return to my "old home", Styria. Mountainous tours, like around the Alpl, or to the rolling hills of the south provide the perfect conditions for training tempo, strength and endurance, and both cycling and running, with high intensity.

Ironman Austria Runde

Maria Wörth, Carinthia, Austria
106km 890m 860m

Ironman Austria

One core training unit of mine is swimming (45', the last 25' at competition pace) then straight on to the bike (2 hours at basic pace + 2 hours at Ironman pace, averaging ~40 km/h), finishing off with an acceleration run of 3 x 5 km (5 km 4'10/km - 5 km 4:00/km - 5 km at an increased pace).

If my performance levels are high enough here, I'm ready to compete!

Top routes of Mario's triathlon training camp in Mallorca

The focus of a spring training camp is to rack up kilometers. My favorite training destination to do this is  Mallorca. There is every sort of terrain here, from very hilly to basically flat. I can test my strength and endurance in high gears on windy stretches and in the Tramuntana mountains. Regeneration is paramount in this phase (and whenever there is a lot of training). Don't forget to find the perfect balance between training and relaxing!
