Via Claudia Augusta

Ride the classic trans-Alpine line from Germany to Italy on the old Roman road. This collection follows the signed Via Claudia Augusta from the Lech valley and Füssen across Tirol via Reutte and Landeck to the Reschen Pass, then cruises through South Tyrol and down the Adige past Merano, Bolzano, and Trento toward Verona or the Venice lagoon (Altino).

Expect mostly smooth bike paths and quiet roads with a few gravel or farm-track stretches. A touring bike is ideal; 35 mm+ tires make the rough bits easy. The big effort is the steady climb to Reschen/Resia, then it’s a long, gentle descent with alpine views, apple orchards, and plenty of gelato stops. Look for the famous church tower in Lake Resia, riverside riding in the Vinschgau, and Roman history all along the way.

Navigation is straightforward thanks to good signage, and valley sections are very family-friendly. Best season is May to October; shuttles can help over Fernpass or other steep links if you want to skip the toughest bits. Use this collection to plan the full crossing or dip into shorter stages around Vinschgau and the Adige cycleway.
