From St. Johann im Pongau, roll out along the Salzach and swing south into the Gasteinertal—expect a steady valley climb that ramps up past Bad Hofgastein toward Bad Gastein and Böckstein. From there, you’ll need to hop on the short Tauernschleuse train through the tunnel to Mallnitz (check current schedules and bike rules). Once in Carinthia, it’s a glorious descent along the Mölltal cycle route to Obervellach.

It’s about 70 km with roughly 1,480 m of climbing, mostly on quiet roads and signposted cycleways, with a few short gravel or busier stretches. Bring lights for tunnels and layers for the cooler high-valley air.

Fun bits: St. Johann is home to the dramatic Liechtensteinklamm gorge and the twin-towered “Pongauer Dom.” Obervellach sits at the gateway to Hohe Tauern National Park—don’t miss the Groppensteinschlucht gorge or a spin along the Mölltal Radweg.
