This route takes you from the highland spa town of Freudenstadt, nestled in the heart of the Black Forest, northwards all the way to Rastatt on the Rhine plain. You’ll start off surrounded by dark forest and crisp mountain air—Freudenstadt is known for having Germany’s largest market square—and then gradually descend out of the woods. Be ready for a good amount of downhill riding (over 1,700 meters of descent!), so check your brakes before you set off.

Most of the ride (over 90%) is on smooth, paved surfaces, with rolling forest tracks and quiet back roads making up the bulk of the journey. Expect a few sections of gravel, but nothing a standard bike can’t handle. As you ride north, you’ll notice the landscape open up and the climate get milder, finishing your 65 km adventure in Rastatt—a Baroque gem famous for its impressive palace and gardens.
