Poplar to Barbican Cycling Route

Ready for a city ride with a bit of everything? This route takes you from Poplar in East London—famous for its riverside parks and striking modern developments—straight through the heart of the city to Barbican, the iconic arts and residential complex.

The journey’s just under 9 km, mostly on well-paved cycleways and quiet roads, making it a great choice for a relaxing urban adventure. You’ll cruise past Canary Wharf’s glittering towers, weave through historic streets near Aldgate, and maybe catch glimpses of the old city walls as you ride west.

While most of the ride is on smooth asphalt, expect a stretch or two of gravel and paving stones, especially as you get closer to the Barbican’s unique concrete landscape. There’s a gradual climb (the highest point is about 41 meters up), but it’s nothing too taxing, so just enjoy the sights.
