Roll out from Leuven’s historic center—home to KU Leuven (founded in 1425) and the Gothic Town Hall—and head north on signposted bike paths. You’ll leave the buzz of the Oude Markt behind and glide past the Vaartkom area before settling into a mostly car‑free ride toward Herent.

The route is about 6.9 km, almost entirely paved and smooth (mostly asphalt), with gentle ups and downs—only around 25 m of climbing—so it’s easy cruising for commuters and casual riders alike. Roughly two‑thirds is on dedicated cycleways, with the remainder on quiet residential roads.

You’ll finish in Herent, a leafy municipality just north of Leuven with a relaxed, village feel and a handy train station for connections back if you’re not looping. It’s a great there‑and‑back spin or a short hop to cafés and bakeries around the center.
