Roll out from Algolsheim, a quiet Alsatian village near the Rhine, and spin east to the river crossing into Germany at Breisach am Rhein. Quick bonus stop: the hilltop St. Stephansmünster in Breisach has great views. From here it’s easy cruising across the Breisgau plain toward Freiburg, skirting the Kaiserstuhl/Tuniberg vineyards.

The ride is about 54 km with gentle climbing (around 240 m total). It’s mostly smooth and simple—lots of dedicated cycleways and quiet roads, and roughly 96% paved—so you can settle into a steady rhythm.

As you reach the outskirts, follow the Dreisam cycle path straight into Freiburg’s bike-friendly heart. Freiburg is famed for sunshine, sustainability, the Gothic Münster, and the little Bächle water channels running through the old town—perfect place to park the bike and grab a coffee on Münsterplatz.

Nice extras if you’ve got time: detour to UNESCO-listed Neuf-Brisach’s Vauban star fort near the start, or sample local wines in villages along the way. Cross-border tip: carry ID for the Rhine bridge. Scenic, mellow, and very rideable.
