On August 30th, 2009 we are hosting a kick-off party at Safeco Field before we hit the road for Florida (with a few stops on the way of course). The Mariners have a 1:10pm game against Kansas City. Before the game we're having a kick of party near Safeco Field (exact location still tbd) that we are hoping all of you will come out for to support us and I Love Baseball. This is a great way to hear more about what we're doing and partner with us in this adventure!

September 2nd - Diablo Lake, WA. We have to time our arrival to Spokane, so we can catch a Spokane Indians game on the 4th. So we're going to swim accross Diablo Lake and possibly do a hike as well. This is our estimated swim entry.

August 31st - Diablo Lake, WA. We're going to arrive at Diablo Dam after our second day of riding. This will have been our first full day of riding and we're going to cover about close to 90 miles with a decent amount of elevation gain, so it should be difficult. We're going to stay an extra day here to swim and do a possible hike and or run on some of the cool trails. It's seems odd to have a non-biking day after just two days, but it's because we have a baseball game to go to on the night of the 4th of September in Spokane and have to pace ourselves

August 30th - Arlington, WA. The first night of our adventure we're going to be able to stay with one of our good friends, and co-workers at RW Anderson Homes (our day job) Dale Walker (no relation to Bekah). It's going to be about a 50-mile ride up to Dale's house, which will be nice considering we may not get out of Seattle until 5pm or so.

September 3rd - Omak, WA. We're going to bike 109 miles to get to Omak, where we're going to be staying with Bekah's friend, Al Scheibner, that she met through her teaching days. This will be our first century ride of the trip. Al and Jeanne fed us like kings from the moment we walked in the door and we shared a lot of fun conversation.

September 4th - Davenport, WA. We modified our route to pass through Grand Coulee and down here to Davenport as to avoid some unknown climbs on the northern route. We felt like we did plenty of biking and climbing regardless--not to mention the dog that almost tackled us off of our bikes in the middle of no where!

September 5th - Spokane, WA. We're going to do a 'short' 80 miles into Spokane. We're going to arrive in time to spend some time with Philip's Great Aunt and Uncle, Ruth and Dick, shower, and head off to the Spokane Indians game to talk about I Love Baseball. The Indians said that they're excited to receive us at the game and to talk about how we're triathloning across America to raise money and awareness for the work they're doing in the Domican Republic. It was so great to spend time with my Aunt and Uncle that I haven't gotten to see in forever. Thank you soo so much for having us and being so great!

September 6th - Coeur d'Alene, ID. We biked here and met up with Mandy and her sweet sail boat at Independence point (Downtown CDA). From there, we got in the water and swam to arrow point--which apparently is crazy far if you ask anyone from CDA. Mandy had us pretty much convinced that we all should move to CDA after staying with her. Such a fun time!

September 8th - Thompson Falls, MT. We had to bike about 100 miles and two passes to get here. We didn't know anyone here, so we had to sleep all three of us in the van down by the river... haha

September 9th & 10th- Lakeside, MT. We're going to stay with Jen and Johan Bester at the YWAM base on Flathead Lake. Jen and Bekah have been friends for life, so it works out perfectly that we'll get to stay with Jen and John as we pass through. They had two beautiful little girls that were so great to play with, and they just blessed us so much with our stay there!

September 11th - Missoula, MT. We stayed at the Alpha Omega house in Missoula. This is a community housing option for college students that one of our friends, Lindsay Schuette, lived at when she was the intern for the house. We got to meet a lot of awesome people, and it made us miss college a bit...

September 12th - Helena, MT. We went to the Helena Brewers game and got interviewed by the local TV station for the evening news. There wasn't a huge interest by the fans, but we did make a couple great connections that will hopefully turn into relationships. Brian's sister's friend's parents, Scott and Kathy, put us up for the night and gave us an awesome breakfast before heading out!

September 13th - Bozeman, MT. We were privileged to stay with Tim and Tammy Fountaine here in Bozeman. They completely blessed us with more food than we could eat, packed us extra food for the road, and even upgraded our cooler for one with a draining spout! They're a family of auto mechanics, so Tim even checked out Big Blue for us late Saturday night. Great people.

September 14th - Gardiner, MT. No joke--as we roll into town on the edge of Yellowstone, our odometer hit 1,000 miles! Crazy. We definitely couldn't have planned that even if we wanted to. We stayed at the Baptist Church here. A friend, Daniel Triller, recently stayed here when his cross-country road trip had a minor break down. Hopefully, we'll have full energy going into Yellowstone!

September 13th - Yellowstone. Let the running begin! One of Philip's best friends is getting married on the 19th, so he has to ride ahead to fly out of Jackson Hole on the 16th because he's in the wedding. So he'll cover yellowstone with some running, but mostly biking. Whereas Brian is hoping to run the entire park--North to South

September 20th-22nd - Jackson, WY. This is where Philip found a crack in the frame of his bike. Fortunately, he was able to modify Bekah's bike to make it all the way to Denver. The best thing about this whole ordeal was it gave us a reason to hangout with Jed and Annie's family in Jackson. Jed played professional baseball for about 12 years with the Royals organization, so that was a great connection to make.

September 23rd - Boulder, WY. We camped in Boulder next to a teepee for the night. We're in a standard RV/Tent campground, and the teepee belonged to 'Viking Dave' as his permanent residence for the past 2 1/2 years!!! It get's 40 below during winter--and I thought riding across the states was an adventure...

September 24th - Rock Springs, WY. We camped in Walmart's parking lot and used starbucks as our internet headquarters! We weren't alone, as there are numerous RVs in Walmart's parking lot nearly every night! The line on the map is NOT the route we took to Rawlins. The map won't let you follow I-80, but it was legal to bike I-80 in WY and even safer with sufficient shoulders unlike some of the highways where the cars are going just as fast.

September 25th - Rawlins, WY. Another night camping for the Delivering Hope Tour! Bekah discovered the best ice cream ever in Rawlins: Ashby's Cherry Almaretto (I guess it trumps Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia, for all of those ice cream people out there)

September 26th - Laramie, WY. Garret and Kari gave us the ''full meal deal" here!!! Literally: steaks, halibut caught by family in Alaska, and fettucini alfredo! It was so great to stay with such generous locals to tell us a bit more about WY and especially Laramie, as we traveled most of the state camping.

September 28th - Denver, CO. Brian had a wedding back in Seattle to fly back to, so we had an extended stay in Denver. It was much needed time to see a myriad of friends, bike a new bike (for Philip), and let our bodies rest up a bit. Bob, Marie, and Jack were so generous to let us come and go throughout the week, and it was exciting to be there as the Rockies clinched a playoff spot!

October 4 - Sterling, CO. We biked 130 miles, but were actually hoping to bike more... Our place to stay was up in Ogallala with Cathy Mindt and Russell Knight--the parents of our friend, Abby. They blessed us so much for the two nights with them. Cathy, a professional masseuse and mother, put her skills to work on our bodies and stomachs! It was such a fun, unexpected stay in a little-known part of eastern Nebraska.

October 5th - Ogalla, NE. We attempted to swim across Lake McConaughy. However, this turned into quite the adventure. We hadn't lined up a support boat, so we decided to head out and see how it would be regardless. It was about 3 miles across assuming you can swim it directly across. After about half an hour of swimming and waves nearly big enough to surf from all the wind, we decided to turn back. Not having an alternate plan, Bekah was waiting somewhere on the other side, so Brian and I swim and jog a couple miles along the beach to the road in our full body wetsuits. We manage to wave down a truck that carried us a couple miles and helped us reconnect with Bekah by using their cell phone. Lessons learned. haha.

October 6th - North Platte, NE. Not only were Cathy and Russell great hosts, but between them and their daughter Abby, they lined up places for us to stay all the way across the state! In North Platte, Raymond and Janet let us stay at their lake cabin for the night and hot some hot chili waiting for us!
Nocleg po 3875,5 km
October 7th - Kearney, NE. Abby's friends, Steele (pronounced Steely and is a girl's name) and John, let us stay in their new home, despite the current remodeling they were doing. Bekah took off from us halfway through the day to get some much-needed family time in South Dakota, so Brian and I finished the rest of our 100 miles with panniers. Both being builders, we always get excited about seeing the houses that we stay at, and they had an awesome, old house with a lot of character. We crashed pretty early to gear up for another big ride the following day.

October 8th - Lincoln, NE. We biked ALL day to cover the 138 miles to Lincoln. The wind didn't help us any, but fortunately the rain held off and we were able to arrive shortly before the Nebraska Huskers kicked off for Thursday night football. Fortunately, it was an away game so we didn't have to battle the traffic, and we were able to stay with Matt Moorehead, the son of Raymond and Janet Moorehead who's cabin we stayed at back in North Platte. Matt took us out on the town to see the game from the Huskers perspective and we had a great time slamming a ton of food and watching the Huskers win. Matt also showed us around the city and the campus the following day before we took off to Omaha. Matt, has a friend that runs a smokehouse right along our route, so we were able to stop in and feast!

October 9th, 10th - Omaha, NE. We stayed in Omaha with Shanon and Greg Good and thankful to have a place as we woke up to snow in the morning!!! It's still a while until we start heading south, so we might have a bit of weather ahead of us...
Nocleg po 4340,4 km
October 11th - Greenfield, IA. It was a looong 100+ miles to get here from Omaha... Although a net elevation gain of nearly zero, there are continuous streams that create rolling hills forever... We camped regardless of the weather and the cold. It was snowing at 1am but gone by the morning!
Nocleg po 4466 km
October 12h - Knoxville, IA. We got to stay with Philip's Great Aunt and Uncle on his Dad's side of the family. It was so great to catch up with Peg and Mike, share some family stories, laughs, and meals together. What a great excuse to visit family all across the country!
Nocleg po 4682 km
October 13th - Burlington, IA. The roads in Iowa don't have paved shoulders... While we were riding to Burlington, we got buzzed a little too close by a few cars, so we actually stopped biking and had Bekah drive us to a parallel road to make forward progress on. We were definitely rattled to say the least. Fortunately, we got to stay with Caroline and Kirk and their boys, Cody and Casey. Brian knew them from back in his playing days when he stayed with them while playing in a tournament.

October 14th - Davenport, IA. We made it up to Davenport just before dark. It took us longer than normal because we went back and forth between highway 22 and route 61 a couple times because there wasn't enough shoulder. Regardless, we got there safe, and got to stay with Kathy and Bob Shriver. They are such a great couple that are involved in their own church missions and a ton of other activities and hobbies. We didn't even know it, but the day we left was Kathy's Birthday! We should have been cooking her breakfast. It was fun to see a recently-retired couple that is enjoying life and staying active in a lot of different ways
Nocleg po 4932,8 km
October 15th - Peru, IL. We made it through another rainy day of 80 miles and one flat tire to get to Peru, IL. This is where Philip's aunt and uncle, Verene and Dan, live and so it was great to stay with them. You never get to see family enough when they're halfway across the country, but a perfect stop on a trip like this. We were treated to a feast topped off with brownie and ice cream sundaes in the neighbor Kevin's hot tub! Dan runs the automotive technology program at a community college in town, so Philip got up early to take Big Blue into Dan's five-hour lab class. His students work on real cars that need real work to have the best training as possible, so he put a couple to work on Big Blue and they replaced the radiator, changed the oil, checked the tires, and gave us a way to get the front window working again! It was so great to see Dan in his element and learn some more about cars. This made for a later start on the 100-mile day up to Chicago, but well worth it!
Nocleg po 5076 km
October 16th-20th - Chicago, IL. We needed an extended stay to let our bodies recoup a little bit, as we had only one day off since leaving Denver. So what better place to stay than in Chicago, right?! We split time staying with Philip's cousins, Brian and Steve, and another friend, Brian Moon so it was perfect.
Nocleg po 5215,3 km
October 21st - Cassopolis, MI. We rode south of South Bend, but then got to stay with Debbie and Dante just north of South Bend and they gave us a tour of Notre Dame. I (Philip) really wanted to dislike Notre Dame, but the campus was beautiful and we came at the perfect time of year to see it dressed in its fall colors. Back at the Pola's, Dante preparred a feast and then whooped me in ping pong, two games to one... I'll have to return for a rematch I guess. They were such great people, and it was such a fun stay for us!
Nocleg po 5312,5 km
October 22nd - Fort Wayne, IN. We rode in to Fort Wayne in the dark, and were so thankful to be able to stay with Tom and Cathy (sorry for any mispellings) Farney--the parents are our friend Carolyn in Seattle. We hated to leave in the morning because it was practically a monsoon in the morning.
Nocleg po 5410,7 km
October 23rd - Richmond, IN. We battled the elements and perservered through some serious headwinds and rain to keep moving forward. At one point, Philip got a flat tire and at that very instant, it started to pour harder than anything that I've ever experienced!!! The rain was coming down in sheets and the wind was blowing it so hard--it was crazy! At one point shortly after that, we were biking along as the wind was still blowing and as a guy in an oncoming car saw us, he held up his hands in disbelief at us riding our bicycles... Gotta keep moving right?! Although we were out in the middle of what seemed like nowhere, Philip found Colin and Lori on the couch surfing website to stay with. They were such a fun couple that had a ton of stories of their own travels to share with us.
Nocleg po 5525 km
October 24th, 25th - Cincinnati, OH. We got to stay with Dale and Pam Schuster when we got to Cincinnati and it was so much fun. We explored the city and went into Covington, KY, which is right on the other side of the river as well. Normally, empty nesters, we caught them on a weekend when their son, Joe, was also in and out, so it was fun being a part of the action. They introduced us to some of their specialties like Getta and Three-way, which were both amazing! Thanks for making room for us!
Nocleg po 5658,3 km
October 26th - Lexington, KT. After staying with Dale and Pam, they got us connected with their daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Chad, who let us be their first guests in their new house! Chad and I (Philip) were able to share the way Jesus is working in our lives and our cities as Chad is an intern at their church. It was also great because we actually rode past where their house was to give us time to check out Keeneland in the morning before taking off!

October 28th, 29th - Knoxville TN After getting lost, we finally made it to the Hanifins to stay with Old Bo, Meriam, and Molly. They were so welcoming and refreshing after all of our adventures that we would have liked to have been able to stay longer. It was also fun meeting Caleb, Molly's boyfriend, who just this last summer biked across the country as well so we were able to swap some stories and solidify a better route out of there.

Nov. 3-7 - Chattanooga, TN. We progressed passed Chattanooga but backtracked to visit The House--a college ministry at Univ. of Tenn. Chattanooga-- and to fill a bit of time before arriving in Savannah, GA for some events scheduled there. So we decided to fill some of that time around Chattanooga doing fun rides to see some of the sites with Philip's parents who flew in to join them.

October 30th - Chattanooga, TN. We rode all day in our witch costumes for Halloween and probably got more honks than we had in the rest of the trip combined--it was pretty ridiculous. We got to stay with the cousin of one of Philip's good family friends, the Vauchers. Susan and Ryan and their two boys Lucas and Dane put us up for the night even though they had Susan's sister Sandra and her husband in town for the weekend. It was great night and they were all such good people. It was raining again when we went to leave in the morning and Ryan's offer to sit and watch football was very enticing...

October 31st - Cleveland, TN. Entering Cherokee National Forest Brian and Philip swam three miles in the lake here before Bekah and Brian ran 18 miles and Philip was their support. Bekah is training for a marathon and logistically, we couldn't have everyone running, so Philip was support and then went back and biked all that he missed the next morning before continuing on.

October 31st - Ducktown, TN. We stayed in the bunkhouse of Raft One Rafting Company. Dusty, the owner, and Bruce, one of the main guides, were great to hang out with as this wasn't our typical Halloween... Given more time and ideally some warmer weather, it would have been great to be able to go rafting with these guys. The river looked awesome! You should check them out if you're ever in the area www.raft1.com

November 1st - Clayton, GA. Not knowing anyone in Clayton, GA, we got permission from the grocery store, Ingles to stay in our van in their parking lot. We're always thankful that we have that option when there isn't any where else to stay. On the ride there, Brian was behind Philip as they were cruising down a hill and a squirrel kamikazeed into Philip's foot as he was pedaling! Philip didn't even know what hit him as he was so focused on the road ahead.

November 2 - Hartwell Lake. We biked to Hartwell Lake and spent the day biking in South Carolina--a state that has coastline on the Atlantic!!! Anyways, we biked there and swam about a mile across the lake and it was sunny and warm and just one of those amazing moments. Bekah found an awesome campsite right on the lake and we made a little bonfire at night. It was pretty sweet!

November 9 - Athens, GA. We stayed a night outside Athens, GA with George and Elisha Boggs and their two awesome kids: Amelia Boggs and James George Wilder Boggs. They are great people that spent a little time up in the northwest and are friends of Bekah and her family. They have a great community of friends and family down there that they invited over for a potluck dinner for us to share at. It was a great night capped off by a banjo, mandolin, guitar and some good ol' southern singing.

November 10th - Augusta, GA. Well, tropical storm Ida got us in full force today as we biked about 93 miles in it. It was raining soo hard that we just had to laugh. We were soaked to the bone, but it wasn't too cold so we just tried to enjoy it. Unfortunately, all the rain did a toll on our bikes which forced us to spend the next morning at a bike shop getting Brian's bike functioning again. Thankfully we were able to stay with Zack Albrecht, who Philip met a few years back in Spain. It was great having a friend to stay with and we went out for a late-night Waffle House experience! haha.

November 11th - Millen, GA. After a long morning in the bike shop, we couldn't cover as many miles as we were hoping to. We were still able to cover 50 miles despite another sopping-wet day in tropical storm Ida! We'll be making our way to the much-anticipated Savannah, GA tomorrow.

November 12th-14th - Savannah, GA. A big stop on our trip was Savannah because of a local SCAD (Savannah College of Arts and Design) student there, Katie Godkins. Katie is an architect student that found out about the need in the Dominican and is currently designing the future educational complex of I Love Baseball! We were put up by a great guy, Deric Beil, in the basement of his historic house right beside Forsyth park. Unfortunately we were so busy with ILB events that we didn't get to spend as much time with him as we would have liked. Over the weekend we met a lot of people and raised close to $800, so it was a great stay for us. Also, the weather finally changed for the better and were out in shorts and t-shirts for most of it!

November 15th - Amelia Island, FL. We're finally on our last state!!! Not being able to line anything up in time, we found a great little camping spot and met some of our camping neighbors. We were lucky to get a spot too, as some of the people reserved their sites months in advance and we just happened to get one of the last ones. This was a long day mileage-wise as we did about 125 miles. However, the wind was to our backs and the sun was on our face. Our bodies definitely don't feel like they did back in Nebraska after doing a day this long; my body has a few little aches and pains that are adding up with the miles...

November 16th - Flagler Beach, FL. We did another great day in the Florida sun as we're making our way down the coast. We got to stay with Jill and Howard Melton, who are a great couple that have a zeal for life and mentoring youth, and we had a great time with them in the little time that we had. Jill had to work in the morning, so we got to hangout with Howard before taking off. So we loaded up the cars: Big Blue with our total existence on the road, and Howard's SUV with two kayaks and a surf board! We had a great breakfast down by the beach and launch the kayaks--I'm pretty sure they're not sea kayaks but we went for it anyways. After emptying out the water and sand a couple times each from failed attempts, Brian and I made it past the shore break and paddled around for a bit. Once we got comfortable, we started trying to catch the waves almost like a surf board. After partially catching a couple, we were beyond the break, so the next huge wave just toppled both of us in the powerful whitewash! We had to swim the kayaks in and shower off before taking off on the bikes for another 80 miles or so!
Nocleg po 6710,9 km
November 17th - Cocoa, FL. Howard and Jill set up us with their friend Susan, who was so great to take us in as we were practically there! This whole trip has been like that where the Lord just provides, and you get to meet so many interesting people from all walks of life and it's exciting and re energizing! Susan has a beautiful condo right on the beach! It's so crazy to think of all the landscapes that we've crossed and climate changes we've seen, and now it's all paying off! (not like the rest of it was bad, but Florida in November is perfect!)

November 18th - Vero Beach, FL. We got to stay with Terry, who I, Philip, found on Couch Surfing (couchsurfing.com) it's a website that I often use when traveling to meet local people and stay with them as they open up there home. Well, Terry has a revolving door policy at his paradise house. He's the local park Ranger with the ocean in the front and the lagoon out back! He was already hosting three other people: A couple from David and Sam from Taiwan and Pilar from Argentina. Six guests is nothing for Terry as he has had upwards of 25 guests before!!! It was a shame that we weren't there longer as they were all such good people

November 19th - West Palm Beach, FL. We got connected with our friend Tahnee's friend Jill after staying with Tahnee in Nashville. I know that's kind of hard to follow, but that's how this whole trip has worked out. Jill and Aaron are a great young couple that are busy with their first child, Dillon, and the rest of life. Aaron flips forclosed houses, so he was gone most of the time we were there, but it made me really excited to work on houses again when I get home!

November 20th - Ft. Lauderdale, FL. We thought that we were going to be going all the way to Miami mostly because Miami is Miami--not because we had anyone there to see or stay with. As it turned out, we had some great people to stay with, Quintin and Hannah Du Plessis, in Ft. Lauderdale so that made it clear that that's where we were meant to be. That made it one of our shortest days of the trip to get to Ft. Lauderdale and left us enough daylight to enjoy the beach and the day more than are usual, twilight arrival.
