Required equipment: Hiking or mountain boots mandatory; trekking poles strongly recommended. Bring a rain jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat. Description of the Hike This short hike leads you just above the tree line to one of the oldest alpine huts in Slovenia, a century-old structure that offers an outstanding view of the two parallel valleys below. The panoramic scenery from this vantage point is a perfect reward for your effort. On your return, the trail brings you past the tranquil Shepherds Lake, a peaceful and picturesque spot nestled in the alpine landscape. From there, the path descends gently back to Jezersko, completing a scenic and memorable journey through the heart of Slovenia’s mountains. Hut Opening Times * From May until June 20th and again from September 15th to November, the hut is open only on weekends. Interesting Facts Jezersko is known for exceptionally clean mountain air, historically attracting visitors seeking “healing air” for respiratory health. Manyof Slovenia’s oldest mountain huts were built in the early 1900s by local mountaineers and shepherds; several, including the one on this hike, still retain their original rustic charm. Shepherds Lake (Planšarsko jezero) is man-made. It was created by locals to resemble the large glacial lake thatonce filled the valley thousands of years ago. The Jezersko region lies along the historic “Salt Route,” a trading path once used to transport salt from Austria to Slovenia. The area is surrounded by dramatic limestone peaks belonging to the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, a mountain range formed duringthe Mesozoic era and sculpted by glaciers during the Ice Age.
