Über diese Route
I got a new bike, and was looking for a way to get to Fort Tilden Beach. There weren't any (protected) bike path that went direct south through Queens and Brooklyn, so I looked at the NYC Bike map for viable bike routes, and just headed south. There are a bunch of mistakes along the way as I missed a few key streets and had to adjust the route. I added some notes along the way explaining some stuff. the route is 25 miles. maybe next time i shouldn't do that much on my first ride. gonna feel this tomorrow.
Starting from Jackson Heights, south along side streets, through Forest Park, eventually ending up on the Jamaica Bay Greenway. Travel along the greenway with a quick stop at Carnarsie Pier, and also Floyd Bennett Field, and Fort Tilden.

I was planning on heading east along Eliot Ave, and south along Fresh Pond Road. unfortunately I completely missed Eliot Ave, and it's too far to backtrack. so might as well continue south.

I had to walk my bike across a crosswalk to put myself in a good position for further travel south. it's a big intersection.

ok, 80th street here goes in the opposite direction, so let me try 79th st instead.

CAUTION: the nyc bike map mentions there is a potential future bicycle path here. figured there was some rudimentary path at least. nada, it's just a huge swath of grass flanked by highway traffic. there's no crosswalk here. I decided to wait until there was no traffic before i crossed.

Finally made it. Jamaica Bay Greenway bike and ped path. protected. the ride is pretty lonely and boring, once you're on it, there's no exit until Carnarsie Pier.

tried to deal with the cramping, took a quick break to see if the shade spot at this location was there. it was not.
