This is a section of the D&L (tow-path) trail from Sand Island in Bethlehem to the trail's meeting with the Palmer & Bethlehem Township Bike Path in Palmer Township, underneath the newly constructed Route 33 interchange and river bridge.
Please take note of a few new regulations on this section of trail, as far as parking and travel go:
- Access to the D&L trail in Freemansburg is now limited due to new property ownership. The previous entrance and parking area for the D&L trail on Lockhouse Road is no longer a public road or parking area. Per a notice on the D&L trail website: please use the trailhead parking at the municipal parking lot along the canal near the intersection of Monroe and Main streets. The pedestrian bridge adjacent to the borough parking lot is closed but bicyclists/walkers/runners are encouraged to access the D&L Trail by traveling east on Main Street to the gravel road that begins at the lower left corner of the Willow Grove Hotel parking lot, which is now closed to public use. The gravel road leads directly to the D&L Trail. Please adhere to the the posted signage and avoid parking on private property.
- On the trail route near the new Route 33 overhead bridge, you'll notice Bethlehem Boat Club on the right side of the trail, and you'll come to a dead end with Hope Road. A stone trestle will be to your left. While it looks as though the trail continues underneath the new Route 33 overpass, that is not the case. Use this trail at your own risk and it is no longer maintained by the D&L park service. To continue properly, turn left up Hope Road under the stone trestle and make a right onto the gravel Route 33 Boat Launch access road which will take you to the parking lot and next section of delineated D&L Trail.
