The wood and stone building that was once here was at first the seat of the civil government of Iloilo until 1901. In 1911 the jail was constructed during the American colonial period, and during World War II it was used as a military garrison by occupying Japanese forces from 1942 to 1945. After the jail closed & inmates moved to another facility in 2006, the Iloilo provincial government officially turned it over to the National Museum in April of 2018 to be the Western Visayas Regional Museum. http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/80781/iloilo-prison-to-get-new-lease-on-life-as-museum

La Paz church, or Nuestra Señora de la Paz y Buen Viaje (Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage) was founded in 1857, the church is named after a statue of Mary that was on-board the Manila Galleon “El Almirante” in 1624. After 3 months of travel and a fire on the ship, a Spanish governor also on-board attributed the safe arrival of the ship to the statue. Today, the church is popular to pilgrims and others asking for protection from the Lady. The district of La Paz is named after her, but the actual statue was placed at the Antipolo Cathedral in the province of Rizal. Today, an antique replica can still be found in Antipolo. http://lapazchurch.org/about/ https://books.google.com.ph/books?id=OSqhZphG_gQC&pg=PA129&lpg=PA129&dq=el+almirante+galleon&source=bl&ots=rLposXBwPF&sig=egeOWxGq1yIRJAXqPQ0UH37Wg-A&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwis6qGF7JTdAhWVM94KHZlxDSwQ6AEwDXoECAgQAQ#v=onepage&q=el%20almirante%20galleon&f=false

Jaro Belfry or kampanario was built in 1744 and had undergone multiple reconstructions due to earthquakes and typhoons over the years. Like other watch towers in the country, it was built high so that its bell tolls could reach far and wide, and its view distant enough to see incoming aggressors. Its size makes a statement of its long-looming presence over the rich families and padres that lived here throughout the past century, despite its now rust-colored, soot-stained facade. https://iloveiloilo.wordpress.com/2007/06/22/the-campanario-a-landmark-of-jaro-iloilo/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/iloilocity/1452911494/in/photostream/

Iloilo National High School. Founded in 1902, the school moved to its current location in 1906, and was originally made of wood. It is also known as a “Gabaldon school”, which refers to Isauro Gabaldón y González of Nueva Ecija who authored the Gabaldon Act of 1907. The act appropriated P1 million pesos between 1907 and 1915 for the construction of permanent school buildings in the country. The architecture of these “Gabaldon schools” were designed by William Parsons who supervised the design of public buildings and parks during American colonization. He was referred to the job by Daniel Burnham whom Filipinos recall more often since he designed city plans for Manila and Baguio in 1905, and has a park named after him in Baguio. Today, an iteration of Parson’s Gabaldon structure can be seen in many schools, noted by a wide main facade full of columns and arches. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isauro_Gabald%C3%B3n https://www.facebook.com/GabaldonHeritageSchools/

Roberto's. Located at the first floor of the Javellana Building, Roberto’s first opened in 1978. It is best-known for its “Queen” siopao: a large, flavorful white bun with bacon, Chinese sausage, chicken, pork adobo, and a boiled egg. A tagline of theirs posted on their menu is “Manamit bisan wala sauce” or “Delicious even without sauce,” and it’s true. They also have a “King” version which has ham, instead of bacon.
