Cycling between the Waal and the Lower Rhine

In the vicinity of Tiel and Wijk bij Duurstede you will find a wetland area with canals, rivers and lakes. This area is popular with water sports enthusiasts, but a bike ride along the water is also absolutely worthwhile. Jump on your bike and let yourself be taken along the most beautiful places in Gelderland.

Wetlands of nature The first part of this route takes you along several ponds, including the Lingemeer. This lake is an 80-hectare recreational lake that was created by sand extraction. You will find the Lingedael estate around the lake. This estate is gradually being expanded with more water and nature. A little further you cycle via a bridge over the Nederrijn to Rhenen and then you cycle into the woods on the edge of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Enjoy the greenery around you here and work up a sweat on the many small hills that can be found in this area. When you have left the forest, you cycle further along the course of the Nederrijn to Wijk bij Duurstede.

B&B De Bataaf Then you cycle along the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal back to the starting point of the route. There you will find B&B De Bataaf where you can spend the night comfortably. From here you can also follow route 690507 if you would like to explore the area further.

The Amsterdam-Rhine Canal The Amsterdam-Rhine Canal runs from Tiel to Amsterdam. This canal was once built to connect the Amsterdam harbor with the German Ruhr area and it is the busiest canal in the world. If you like boats, you can indulge yourself here. About 100,000 ships sail on the water every year.
