ViaRhôna

From Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean, ViaRhôna follows the Rhône River through France. Expect easy riverside miles, vineyards and orchards, and stops in cities like Lyon, Valence, Avignon, and Arles. Most of the route uses paved cycleways and quiet roads, with short links on roads and the odd gravel or cobble.

It’s mostly flat and family-friendly, especially south of Lyon; the north has a few rolling bits with Alpine views. Wayfinding is solid, so it’s easy to ride a weekend section or go end to end. Highlights include Roman history in Vienne and Arles, the Pont d’Avignon, and the wild landscapes of the Camargue near the sea.

Best ridden spring to autumn; watch for the Mistral wind in the lower Rhône. A touring, gravel, or hybrid bike works well. Pack for mixed surfaces, but expect plenty of smooth asphalt and dedicated bike paths.
