Excursion à vélo d’une journée de Mannheim à Weinheim

Roll out from Mannheim, the “Quadratestadt” at the Rhine–Neckar confluence and birthplace of the bicycle (Karl Drais debuted his draisine here in 1817). Head north/northeast on a relaxed 20 km ride that’s almost flat (about 50 m of climbing). It’s 99% paved—mostly smooth asphalt—with a mix of quiet roads and lots of traffic-free paths.

You’ll leave the city’s grid behind for green stretches through the Viernheimer Wald, then glide past fields toward the Bergstraße. Roll into Weinheim, the “Zweiburgenstadt,” famed for its twin hilltop castles, Windeck and Wachenburg, a lovely market square, and the Exotenwald arboretum with trees from around the world.

Expect an easygoing pace, suitable for any bike. Surfaces are friendly, and most of the route sticks to paths and calm streets. Fancy a view? Add a short (steep) detour up to one of the castles at the end. For the return, hop on the OEG tram (Line 5) or regional trains between Weinheim and Mannheim.
