Excursion à vélo d’une journée de Aix-la-Chapelle à Heimbach

Ready for an adventure through the heart of the Eifel? This ride kicks off in Aachen, famed for its stunning cathedral and laid-back university vibe, and rolls roughly 62 kilometers southeast to the charming town of Heimbach, nestled by the River Rur.

The route is a mix of mostly smooth asphalt (about 81%) and some fun gravel stretches (around 12%), so a touring, gravel, or sturdy road bike is your best bet. Along the way, expect plenty of picturesque forest paths (over two-thirds of the route!) with minimal time spent on busy roads—so you can really soak in those leafy surroundings.

It’s not flat: you’ll tackle nearly 1,000 meters of climbing, peaking at around 555 meters altitude, but you’ll be rewarded with scenic views and a real sense of accomplishment. Once in Heimbach, check out its fairytale castle or stop by the nearby Eifel National Park. Bring snacks and don’t rush—this ride is made for exploring, not racing!
