Ready for some fresh air and mountain views? This ride takes you from the bustling city center of Sofia straight to the quieter, industrial town of Pernik, covering a bit over 42 kilometers. You’ll start off in Sofia, Bulgaria’s lively and historic capital, passing out of the city and climbing steadily into the hills—expect a solid workout, with nearly 900 meters of ascent! You’ll tackle some impressive heights (over 1,100 meters at the highest point), and much of the ride is along peaceful roads and tracks, perfect for soaking in the scenery and getting away from traffic.

The surfaces can get a bit mixed—some gravel and unpaved bits pop up—but the bulk is paved or asphalt, so a sturdy road or hybrid bike will do just fine. Arriving in Pernik, you’ll find a former mining town with an industrial vibe and rich folklore traditions, especially if you time your ride with the famous Surva Festival.
