Southwrk Cyclists Healthy Ride

A ride to look at some trees. Boring. Maybe – but trees, we are realizing, are not just a taken-for-granted background. They matter. They soak up CO2 and are good for our health.

Points d’intérêt le long de l’itinéraire

  1. Point d'intérêt après 1,7 km

(Now cut down) Norfolk Island Pine Alas, this tree is no more. Checking in May 2023, block in scaffolding and the tree missing.Tucked behind Lyle house. Access path is narrow, take care. According to the Map, a house plant gone feral. And a sure sign of global warming.

  2. Point d'intérêt après 4,1 km

Chumleigh Gardens Not in the printed Map. According to the digital Tree Map there is a small cluster of very unusual trees in this ornamental "World Garden". Includes 2 Chilean Wine Palms and 2 Chinese Windmill Palms. In Burgess Park note the trunk diameters of the larger trees. This park was mostly created in the 1960s and early 1970s, so you are looking at approximately 50 year-old trees.

  3. Point d'intérêt après 5,9 km

Tulip Tree Enormous tree in a tiny park with several other fantastic trees, e.g. a huge Copper Beech. The park was made from the gardens of a Georgian Terrace built in 1790, so presumably these trees are at least 230 years old.

  4. Point d'intérêt après 10,2 km

Giant Redwood Look over the wall on the bridge past New Cross Gate Station and there it is, a large Redwood right next to the tracks. Its survival must mean that the railway authorities actually have a soul. New cross road is very busy so take care around the buses. The pavement is narrow, so make sure bikes do not block the path.

  5. Point d'intérêt après 11,8 km

Mulberry Map says this story is incorrect, but I like it. There is a plaque saying this tree was planted by Tsar Peter the Great when he stayed at Sayes Court while learning how to make a Navy. That was in 1698, so a 323+ year-old tree.

  6. Point d'intérêt après 14,8 km

Southern Silky Oak Australian tree that was in front of the old Rotherhithe Police Station until they knocked it down. Developers may be cursing this tree which presumably has a 5 star preservation order! Not related to English Oak - was named oak because its hard wood reminded early settlers of oak.

  7. Point d'intérêt après 16,9 km

Tree of Heaven Planted beside the small vault containing the ashes of Dr Alfred and Mrs Ada Salter. Campaigners for better health and other social conditions and for peace in first half of 20th century. Ada was responsible for planting many trees!
