Welcome to the Ærø stage of The Castle Route – part of a 14-stage cycling journey across Fyn. This short but memorable stage across Ærø offers maritime history, colourful towns and inviting coastal landscapes.

Through open landscapes
At 32 km, this is one of the shortest stages on the route – but it packs in plenty of variety. The section between Søby and Ærøskøbing is gently hilly with a few rewarding climbs, while the stretch onwards to Marstal is mostly flat. Here, you’ll follow the scenic Nevrestien, a gravel path running close to the coastline with beautiful sea views.

Nature and experiences
Ærø is known for its charming towns and coastal atmosphere. A highlight is Ærøskøbing itself, often referred to as the “Fairytale Town” thanks to its cobbled streets and colourful, well-preserved houses. Along the coast, don’t miss the iconic bathing huts at Eriks Hale and the beach near Ærøskøbing. These picturesque spots are perfect for a break – whether you want to enjoy your lunch, relax by the water or take a refreshing swim at the child-friendly beaches.

History and detours
For a glimpse into the island’s past, consider visiting Søbygaard, Ærø’s only manor house, where local history and legends come to life. In Marstal, the Marstal Maritime Museum offers insight into Denmark’s proud seafaring traditions and life at sea. And of course, no cycling stage is complete without a proper break – stop by Finn's Bageri for what many consider the island’s best baked goods, or explore the many small cafés, farm shops and restaurants along the route.

Your stage ends in Marstal, a lively harbour town with deep maritime roots. Stroll along the waterfront, soak up the atmosphere or continue your island adventure. With its mix of coastal beauty, history and local flavours, this stage on Ærø is short in distance – but rich in experience.
