Cycling day trip from Hattingen to Essen

This ride takes you from the charming medieval old town of Hattingen to the vibrant city of Essen, covering a smooth 22.5 km. Starting out in Hattingen, you might catch a glimpse of the beautiful timber-framed houses or make a quick stop at the old St. George’s Church before hopping on your bike.

The route is super cyclist-friendly—mostly on paved roads and quiet paths, so you can really enjoy the scenery without battling traffic. You’ll gently climb just under 200 meters along the way, but you’ll also descend a bit more as you head towards Essen, so it’s pretty balanced.

As you roll into Essen, you’ll notice the shift from historic countryside to bustling urban life. Essen is famous for its industrial heritage, particularly the Zollverein Coal Mine (a UNESCO site!), and has a great selection of museums, parks, and cafes for a well-deserved post-ride break.
