This tour, which is around 52 km, passes amidst the Vogelberg Mountains through a landscape, which is characterized by a low mountain range that is the largest connected volcanic area on the Continent with basalt and basalt tuffs. Thus, the name also describes the tour since evidence of the volcanic past appear again and again. Labelled as a circular route, the Basalt-Tour begins in the town of Lauterbach and follows the Vulkan-Radweg track till Herbstein (thermal spring, accessible city wall, museum). From there, the marking with the Vogelsberg-Sprien [a bird with green suit on a bicycle] leads us to the municipality of Lautertal and on the biking routes of R2 and R4 through the Schwalm Valley back to the district town. The tour leads further through a gently undulating land; ascents are compensated with splendid views. Before the community of Meiches, it is worthwhile to take a detour to Totenkirche [Church of the Dead] on the hill, Totenköppel, with it's historic cemetery, Sippenfriedhof.
