Lüneburger BACKSTEINTOUR
A cycling route starting in Lüneburg, Lower Saxony, Germany.
Overview
About this route
The starting point of the tour is the Old Crane at Stintmarkt:
The wooden, copper-roofed 'Old Crane' on the Ilmenau is mentioned as early as 1346. One of the last loads lifted with its help was in the 19th century a locomotive for the Braunschweig-Vienenburg railway, which came via the waterway from England to Lüneburg. Today, the 'Old Crane' can be visited as part of a city tour.
Highlights of the Brick Tour: (20 km)
Towpath: On a towpath, ships were once pulled along the river by humans or horses from the land. This towpath was also created this way and takes you directly along the Ilmenau. Nature and history thus connect in an idyllic way.
St. Nikolaihof: This former leprosy hospital of the city of Lüneburg – first mentioned in the 13th century – is still preserved in its original, closed form. The centerpiece of the complex, consisting of several medieval residential houses and barns, is the brick chapel from 1435 with the oldest organ in Northern Europe.
Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul in Bardowick: The cathedral is mentioned for the first time in a document from 1146. After the destruction of Bardowick by Henry the Lion in 1189, various documents and letters inform about the damages to the church. The current church building dates back in its oldest parts to the time before 1189. Stylistically, the architectural style and decorative art point to the middle of the 12th century. Thus, it could very well have been Henry the Lion who had the representative Westbau built in the Romanesque style. The bronze baptismal font, purchased in 1367 and probably cast in Lüneburg, is the oldest piece of equipment. The magnificent altarpiece of Mary was created around 1430.
Adendorf with the chapel: In a historical Lower Saxony two-frame house from 1661 is "Us Heimathus" housed. The displayed objects convey knowledge about prehistory, early history, agricultural life, as well as the local animal and plant life. There is also a local archive with information about the past of Adendorf. The St. John's chapel is also worth seeing.
Lüne Monastery: It is one of the most beautiful and oldest sights. Visitors are welcomed with an intact medieval complex, embedded in extensive gardens. Many valuable art treasures from centuries have been preserved here in the Lüne Monastery. Particularly noteworthy are the entrance hall with the Gothic well, the winter hall with its exposed murals, the cloister with colored stained glass windows and ribbed vaults as well as the chapter house with paintings of the abbesses and the abbess throne.
Anyone who wants to extend the tour a little and get to know the picturesque place Scharnebeck can, shortly after the St. John's chapel in Adendorf, head towards the swimming pool and continue to the Scharnebeck ship lift. This extends the tour by 8 km. From Scharnebeck, it is easy to ride on a side road through nature back to the junction of the Brick Tour in Adendorf and continue on to Lüneburg.
